The Timeless Advice of Luqman Al-Hakim to His Son: A Comprehensive Guide
In the Quran, Allah presents us with the profound wisdom of Luqman Al-Hakim, who offered invaluable advice to his son. This guidance is a timeless reminder for all of us to live a righteous and meaningful life. Let’s explore these pieces of advice, along with their corresponding evidence from the Quran, authentic Hadith, Athar, and tafsir from renowned scholars.
1. The Importance of Tawheed and Avoiding Shirk
Luqman said to his son:
"O my son! Do not associate anything with Allah. Verily, associating partners with Him is a great injustice."
(Surah Luqman 31:13)
Tafsir: Ibn Kathir mentions that Luqman advises his son about the greatest sin, which is shirk. Associating partners with Allah is the one sin that, if a person dies without repenting from it, Allah will not forgive (referencing Surah An-Nisa 4:48). This advice forms the foundation of Islamic monotheism.

2. The Obligation of Being Grateful to Allah and to Parents
"And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination."
(Surah Luqman 31:14)
Tafsir: Al-Qurtubi emphasizes that gratitude is first due to Allah because He is the Creator and Sustainer and secondly to parents, especially the mother, for her immense sacrifice. This ayah reminds us that while parental respect is crucial, it must never contradict obedience to Allah.

3. Patience in Life’s Trials
"O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over whatever befalls you. Indeed, all that is of the matters [requiring] determination."
(Surah Luqman 31:17)
Hadith Reference: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized patience in hardships. He said, “Whoever is patient, Allah will make him patient. Nobody can be given a blessing better and greater than patience.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1469).
Tafsir: Ibn Kathir mentions that this advice encapsulates a key principle of the faith: perseverance through trials, which is part of a believer's journey. Luqman combines the advice of Salah, Amr bil Ma'ruf (commanding good), and patience, signifying the holistic nature of righteousness.

4. Humility and Modesty in Conduct
"And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful."
(Surah Luqman 31:18)
Tafsir: In this verse, Luqman warns his son against arrogance and pride. Walking boastfully is a metaphor for an inflated ego. Scholars like Al-Shawkani explain that humility is a core virtue in Islam, as Allah detests arrogance and loves those who are humble.

5. Moderation in Speech and Actions
"And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys."
(Surah Luqman 31:19)
Tafsir: Al-Qurtubi highlights that Luqman encourages moderation in all things—walking, speaking, and behaviour. Raising one’s voice excessively is likened to the braying of donkeys, which symbolizes ignorance and foolishness.
