👍Successfully Recovered Data From Damaged Toshiba Hard Disk
Overview: This report details the successful recovery of data from a physically damaged Toshiba hard disk drive (HDD). The drive had sustained mechanical failure, leading to the inaccessibility of critical data. Using specialized tools and techniques, we were able to recover the majority of the client's important files.
Drive Information:
Manufacturer: Toshiba
Model: MQ01ABD100 (1TB)
Failure Symptoms: Clicking noise, drive not recognized by BIOS
Condition: Moderate physical damage due to mechanical failure (likely head crash)
Steps Taken for Recovery:
Initial Diagnosis:
The drive was connected to a data recovery workstation. BIOS failed to recognize the drive, confirming physical damage.
Audible clicking sounds indicated a likely head or spindle issue.
Physical Inspection:
The hard disk was opened in a cleanroom environment to prevent further contamination.
It was confirmed that the read/write heads were damaged, causing the clicking sound.
Parts Replacement:
An identical donor drive was sourced, and the read/write heads were replaced using precision tools in the cleanroom.
The spindle and platters were inspected for scratches or additional damage.
Imaging the Drive:
The drive was connected to a specialized data recovery system to create a bit-by-bit image.
Despite some bad sectors, 92% of the drive's data was imaged successfully.
Bad sectors were handled with advanced recovery software, which helped salvage data from partially corrupted areas.
Data Recovery:
The imaged data was analyzed using recovery software.
File systems were partially corrupted, but the majority of the critical data (documents, media, and spreadsheets) was recoverable.
Raw data extraction was employed for unreadable sectors.
Results:
Total Data Recovered: 850GB out of 1TB
File Types Recovered:
Documents (.docx, .pdf): 95% recovery
Photos (.jpeg, .png): 90% recovery
Videos (.mp4, .avi): 85% recovery
Other files: 87% recovery
Conclusion: Despite the mechanical failure of the Toshiba hard disk, 92% of the data was successfully recovered, with critical files fully restored. The remaining data was unrecoverable due to severe platter damage. The recovered files were transferred to a new external drive and delivered to the client.
