Can your business-information provider find every legitimate company?
Probably not.
There is no credible global statistic showing exactly how many legitimate, active companies are invisible to commercial business-information databases. But the evidence points to an important gap.
The UN’s 2025 Global Assessment of Statistical Business Registers found that while nearly 90% of responding countries reported complete or partial coverage of corporations, coverage and data interoperability remain significant challenges.
The World Bank goes further: informal businesses are “almost always missing” from official records, active-business listings and business-level surveys.
So when a company cannot be found (Unable To Locate) in your preferred global or regional database provider, it does not automatically mean the company does not exist.
It may simply mean the data provider's coverage has reached its limit.
A “not found” result should sometimes be the beginning of an investigation, not the conclusion.
That is where independent, on-the-ground verification can add another layer of confidence.
