Installing a luminous sign isn't complicated — but skipping steps will cost you.

We've seen shops lose thousands because a single mounting stud wasn't sealed properly, or because the LED power supply was run at 100% capacity instead of 80%.

After supplying sign shops across 6 countries, here's what actually matters:

🔵 Pattern first, always. Print your channel letter layout at 1:1 scale. Tape it to the mounting surface before anyone touches a drill. It catches measurement errors that cost hours of rework.

🔵 Stud mounting vs. raceway mounting. Stud-mounted looks cleaner for storefronts — but you need the right tools: hammer drill, carbide bits, stainless steel studs in 3/16" or 1/4". For raceway, you're hanging one unit but the anchor load is higher.

🔵 The power supply rule. Never exceed 80% of rated capacity. A 200W Mean Well supply running 200W of LEDs will fail within months. Oversize by 20% minimum.

🔵 Seal EVERY pe*******on. Water gets in through unsealed mounting holes, freezes, and pops your letters off in 18 months. 30 seconds of silicone per stud saves thousands in warranty callbacks.

🔵 Wire like water can get to it — because it will. Heat-shrink butt connectors, not electrical tape. IP65 power supplies for outdoor installs. Daisy-chain, don't star-wire.

One of the most common sign shop callbacks? Rust stains from the wrong fasteners.

Here's a quick screw cheat sheet that'll save you rework:

🔩 ACM panels (Dibond/Alucobond): Self-tapping stainless steel, M4 x 12mm. Stainless is non-negotiable outdoors — zinc-plated rusts in 6 months.

🔩 Screw length rule: Letter depth + panel thickness + 5mm. 30mm letter + 3mm ACM = 38mm screw.

🔩 Acrylic letters: Threaded brass inserts into the acrylic back, then machine screws. Never self-tappers in raw acrylic.

🔩 Nylon washers between screw head and aluminum return. Skip them = white corrosion powder in under a year.

🔩 Ceiling-suspended signs: Threaded rod + lock nuts for the load. Screws are for positioning, not weight-bearing.

And the #1 mistake we see shops make? Drywall screws outdoors. They fail every time.
