First up in amazing series of speakers we’ve got lined up in conjunction with SAM Hoarding Commission: 'An Unnatural History' (unnaturalhistory.sg) is the brilliant duo of conservationist Yong Ding Li and artist Robert Zhao Renhui.
It’s rare that we get to explore the combination of art and science, especially hearing from two absolute masters of their respective crafts! It’s such a privilege to be able to hear from them speak about all things nature in Singapore, from the comfort of your home!
Join us this Saturday at 11am on Zoom!

What does the act of conservation mean to you?

In this first of the two-part talk, artists Darel Seow and Robert Zhao Renhui, and conservationist Dr. Yong Ding Li take a look at how conservation is much more about people and perceptions than just caring for nature.

‘Science ≠ Art’ is part of the 'Conversations on Conservation' online talk series for 𝘈𝘯 𝘜𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘏𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺, an artwork commissioned by SAM. The work is on view from now till 6 June 2021 on the hoarding around SAM's building along 8 Queen Street. More details: bit.ly/SAM-AnUnnaturalHistory

The Singapore Art Museum at 8Q resides in the former Catholic High School. This site-specific mural draws on imagination and heritage to question the histories surrounding the area, and reflect on the museum’s role as a re-teller of official narratives.

𝘈𝘯 𝘜𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘏𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 explores the struggle between man and nature within the heart of Singapore, the world’s greenest city. The mural is complemented by a website, an ever-growing, living archive with contributions from local interest groups and experts. The dialogue between the mural and website serves to expand the exchange of knowledge.

The work is a combination of Darel Seow’s passion for natural history and storytelling, and Lee Xin Li’s interest in heritage and architecture. By capturing Singapore’s cultural and natural history, the work challenges the viewer to consider what heritage means to them and to question the authenticity of the presentation in front of them.

Hi everyone, I’m running a free online zine making workshop this Saturday with the ACM (Asian Civilisations Museum), where you’ll be making a little booklet to tell your own story! In conjunction with the Faith Beauty Love Hope exhibition that’s happening right now, this one’s a little more unique since it’s specially for parents and children to create something together!

Do you have a story to tell? A zine is a small, self-published booklet that falls somewher... powered by Peatix : More than a ticket.

I'll be on CNA938 with Eugene Loh tonight 9pm!

Spoke about lots of things I hadn’t thought about for a while, like being perpetually glued to the TV and inadvertently ending many insects while trying to study them while growing up. You can hear more about my collaboration with Pok Pok & Away on An Unnatural History, as well as an upcoming picture book on SEA mammals that I’m working on with Debby Ng.

Maybe it's time to start speaking in a radio voice all the time since it seems like I can't stop talking!

Known as the “creative” one since he was a child, it was only when he studied science at Junior College that he realised the crossroads of the arts and sciences was where he wanted to be.

Today, Darel Seow is a visual storyteller who illustrates tales of the natural world to engage, excite and educate!

I just found out it’s World Orangutan Day earlier this week and just had to draw this the highly endangered and supremely charming ‘man of the forest’ (what orangutan means in both Bahasa Melayu and Indonesia) from our part of the world!

If you like animals and comics, I’ve got something for you this Sunday morning! (Especially if you’re a kid aged 7-12, but humans of all ages welcome!)

Debby Ng and I will be exploring how climate change affects nature in Southeast Asia, and she’s got some wonderful stories to share about her adventures in the reefs around Singapore. We’ll be drawing some of these animals together, then it’s your turn to create a 4-panel comic about them!

Parents and children, join us for a comics workshop this Sun where ecologist-journalist Debby Ng and illustrator Darel Seow will unravel the secret lives of animals in the region. You'll learn about reef fish and song birds that struggle to survive as their wild homes and daily lives are impacted by climate change. At the end, you'll get to create a simple one page comic too! Register at bit.ly/TMC1DL4. Registration is free.
