The Fifth Thread

The Fifth Thread An upcoming line of products handmade by local SG women, and featuring the traditional hand-embroidery of Yi minority women in Zhaojue, Sichuan China.

Based in Singapore, we work alongside Moonbeam in Zhaojue, which trains and hires local Yi ethnic minority women to sew. Our mission is to create opportunities for the marginalized Yi women to empower themselves, in hopes that they can gain economic independence and provide for their children’s education. By introducing these products into the global market, we want to raise awareness of the rich

Yi culture and the stories behind their traditional Yi embroidery. Our name "The Fifth Thread" pays tribute to the unique traditional embroidery technique of the Yi people, which involves winding four threads into two thicker ones, and fixing them down with a single fifth thread. It highlights the weakest but quintessential fifth thread, which parallels the importance of the Yi women in their male-dominated community.

A while back we had the privilege of being invited down by one of our community partners, Ian, to attend their MSI Thanksgiving service and set up a TFT booth. It was an inspiring afternoon for us!

Our focus these past months has been on working with corporates and organizations on bulk gift orders – through this booth, we were grateful for the opportunity to talk to more people we could potentially collaborate with, to produce more gift items hand-embroidered by our Yi women. 😁

We held booths in 3 locations last Sunday, to showcase the traditional embroidery designs of the Yi people and their stories.

A big thank you to everyone who came by and purchased these handmade items by the Yi women! 😊 Your support meant so much to us (and the friends who so readily stepped up to Caleb's call for volunteers).

We're in the midst of creating our first line of functional & beautiful TFT products, and collaborating with local organizations that empower/enable women through sewing. Our team is very grateful for all the help & love we've received thus far!

Our beloved team of Yi ethnic minority women in Zhaojue, who contribute their sewing & traditional hand-embroidery skills to us.

Being from a marginalized ethnic group and women in a male-dominated society, these women are often denied education and the pursuit of desired career paths. Poverty in this part of China worsens the situation – education of sons are often prioritized, and daughters are sent to work early to support family expenses.

Having to face these circumstances growing up, the Yi women of The Fifth Thread have a common goal: To ensure their children can receive the education & opportunities they never had. They are determined to use the few skills they have to ensure that this goal can be a reality for their children.
