Critical of/for What? doesn't try to give you a clean answer. Instead, it gathers voices — designers, educators, students — and lets the tensions speak. Between what schools teach and what studios demand. Between wanting to push back, and knowing when (and how) to. All set against the backdrop of a neoliberal economy and the kind of technological change that keeps everyone on their toes.

Through interviews, essays, and open discussions, it invites readers to sit with the ongoing question of how criticality is being understood and negotiated within Singapore's evolving design landscape.

Rewinding to one of our favourite quirky prints—created by OuterEdit for RJ Paper’s 30th anniversary.

The Good Intentions Calendar was designed to be more than just a calendar. Inspired by the simple, often funny messages people send around- those light-hearted forwards that come from a place of care, it’s rooted in warmth, humour, and good intentions.

At the heart of it are 24 illustrated greeting cards, each with its own witty liner and gentle reminder. They’re meant to be torn out and shared, turning the calendar into something you can pass on. Nearly 40% of it is designed to be repurposed—less about keeping, more about giving.

There’s a lot of thought in the making too. Different paper stocks are used across the months, alongside neon inks, die-cuts, and perforations that make the whole piece feel interactive. Even the cover doubles up as a stand (so simple, but considered!)

It’s a project that brings together print, material, and intention. Something to keep, share, and hopefully get a smile out of :)

Lien Foundation Report 2015–17: George’s Anatomy reimagines what a report can be—transforming it into a tactile and visual exploration of the human body. Conceptually driven and materially rich, the publication draws parallels between anatomy and construction—what lies beneath, what holds, and what is revealed.

Designed by Couple, the book pushes the boundaries of conventional bookmaking. A round back case binding paired with a Swiss-bound structure creates an unusual tension between precision and exposure—where the spine, typically concealed, is instead expressed through exposed stitching.

Material choices further deepen this narrative. From textile-based cover stocks to layered inserts, each component contributes to a sense of depth and discovery—mirroring the complexity of anatomy itself.

Realising this vision came with its challenges. Aligning imagery across acrylic and print required exacting precision. Engineering a rounded spine within a Swiss bind pushed structural limits. Even the acrylic slipcase had to be carefully bent to mirror the book’s form—without compromising clarity. Finishing details, like glow-in-the-dark endpapers, added yet another layer of technical complexity.

We worked with Currency to get the acetate print to line up perfectly with the exposed bind cover. Even a tiny misalignment shows, so it took a lot of patience and careful adjustments. Tricky as it was, seeing it finally click into place made it all worth it.

ᴅᴇꜱɪɢɴᴇʀ: Benson (SWELL)
ᴛᴇᴄʜɴɪᴄᴀʟ ʜɪɢʜʟɪɢʜᴛ: OTA Bind with endpaper paste down + Round corner 6mm

For this notebook, Benson, the designer from SWELL, tried adding extra scoring lines on the spine to see if it would help the book open with a rounded curve. It didn’t quite change the spine, but the lines ended up creating a subtle, elegant detail that gives the book a little extra character and texture.

This project is all about those thoughtful touches that make each book feel special. From the choice of materials to small details like these spine lines, everything is designed to create a tactile, meaningful experience for the reader.

We tested 0.073 pt lines—the thinnest the printer can handle—so the effect is delicate, almost like a whisper, but noticeable up close. It’s these little experiments and considered details that really bring the book to life.
