🏰 It looks like a fairytale, but the story of Bojnice Castle goes much deeper. Quite literally. 👀

Its distinctive romantic appearance is largely thanks to Count Ján Pálffy, who transformed the castle at the turn of the 20th century. His reconstruction was inspired by the Gothic châteaux of France’s Loire Valley, giving Bojnice the silhouette we recognise today. ✨

One of its biggest surprises, however, is hidden 26 metres beneath the castle courtyard. A natural travertine cave lies inside the rock on which the castle stands.

Centuries of history above. A natural wonder below.

📍 Bojnice, Slovakia 🇸🇰

And if you are planning a full day in Bojnice, you can also visit the National Zoo located right next to the castle. 🦁

🏰 A ruined castle, dramatic views and a legend that has survived for centuries.

High above the landscape near Žilina stands Lietava Castle, one of Slovakia’s largest and most atmospheric castle ruins.

Its medieval walls have witnessed centuries of history, but one of the stories connected with the castle is far more mysterious. According to a local legend, a priest was once thrown from the castle rocks. His robe supposedly became caught in the branches of a tree below, saving his life.

Whether you come for the legend or the history, Lietava gives you another reason to explore northern Slovakia. The walk to the castle leads you away from the city and into the landscape, ending among extensive ruins with panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. 🇸🇰

🏰 One of Slovakia’s oldest cities becomes even more atmospheric at sunset.

Nitra is a place where history naturally blends into the modern city. Rising above its skyline, Nitra Castle has been one of the city’s most important symbols for centuries.

The castle complex is closely connected with the early history of Slovakia and today attracts visitors not only for its historical significance, but also for its atmosphere and views over Nitra and the surrounding landscape. At sunset, the whole area feels even more special. 🌅✨

📍 Nitra, Nitra Region

If you are planning a trip to Nitra, leave some time for an evening walk around the castle and enjoy the city in the last light of the day.
