This art gallery in Madrid has the most complete collection of Spanish paintings from the 11th to the 18th centuries, and many of the masterpieces of great painters of universal importance, such as El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Hieronymus Bosch, Titian, Van Dyck or Rembrandt.
Due to the quality and variety of its collections, the Prado Museum is one of the richest in the world. It brings together the best collection of Spanish painting, the most important works of Flemish and Italian painting, and notable examples of the German, French and English schools. In its rooms you can admire great masterpieces of universal art such as Las Meninas by Velázquez, Las Majas by Goya, The Knight with the Hand on His Chest by El Greco, The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch or The Three Graces by Rubens, among many other paintings of incalculable value. Although the museum was created to house painting and sculpture, it also has important collections of drawings, engravings, coins and medals, and pieces of sumptuary and decorative arts.
The surface area of the museum increased by more than 50 percent in 2007 with the expansion designed by the Spanish architect Rafael Moneo. The new space includes four rooms for temporary exhibitions, the restored cloister of the Jerónimos church , a large reception hall for visitors, an auditorium with capacity for 438 people, as well as different facilities for the storage and restoration of works of art . Outside, the monumental bronze doors by Cristina Iglesias and the Tuscan boxwood garden attract attention.
