Excited to finally share this piece, especially because it feels like a full-circle moment. In 1958, my grandfather was invited to compose music for Queen Beatrix’s visit to Suriname, and now, 67 years later, I’ve had the honour of contributing through painting.

This work was created for the King and Queen’s visit to Suriname, celebrating 50 years of independence. I was commissioned to paint their portrait, with the brief to highlight their visit while highlighting Suriname.

The painting has now been officially handed over to the Dutch Embassy in Suriname and will be sent to the Netherlands, where it will be given to the royals ❤️

50 birds for 50 years of independence.

This project began when I found 100-year-old stained-glass windows in my great-grandparents’ attic in Suriname. Time had worn them down, but after restoring them, I knew they were meant for something special.

Since moving to Suriname, I’ve been inspired by the country’s natural beauty — an artist’s paradise that’s often taken for granted. That inspired me to create a series that invites people to look closer.

Each painted window highlights a bird from Suriname’s rich biodiversity.

To honor 50 years of independence, I painted 50 birds, one for each year of freedom — a fitting symbol of independence: free to move, to rise above, and to remind us to stay connected to the world around us.
