AWEIL, JUNE 9, 2026 โ€“ Massive crowds lined the roads across Northern Bahr el Ghazal to welcome H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit during his tour of the Bahr el Ghazal region.

During the reception for President Kiir, several SPLM members and concerned citizens of Northern Bahr El Ghazal were seen holding signposts that read "Free Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel."

The protesters urged H.E. the President of the Republic to release Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel and other detainees without subjecting them to court proceedings.

The following individuals from the Aweil community have been detained:

1. Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel- Former Vice President (currently under house arrest)
2. Garang Majak Bol - Former Undersecretary in the Ministry of Finance and Planning (currently under house arrest)
3. Deng Lual Wol- Former Undersecretary in the Ministry of Petroleum (held at a National Security facility, known as the Blue House)

Aweil community is appealing to H.E. the President of the Republic to either release these individuals or bring them before a court of law.

BREAKING: South Sudan Artists' Union appoints Agok Agok Lual as NBGs' Artists' Union Chairman

Singer Agok Agok Lual popularly known as Agok Makako has been appointed as the new Chairperson of Northern Bahr El Ghazal State Artists' Union.

In an official document released Friday, South Sudan Artists' Union Chairman James Akech Nhial alias Akut Kuei appointed Agok Agok and other State Artists' Union including three Administrative Areas.
