This past weekend, I attended my first event, For My Founders. It was an inspirational experience to be in the room with others who’ve been through the same experiences.
Founders at every stage were there. Some still at the ideation stage, shaping their dreams. Others were in the thick of it, navigating seed funding, growth, and all the pressure that comes along with the title.
That’s the truth about building a business. No matter how nice it looks from the outside, behind the scenes is plenty pressure, plenty lessons, and plenty “Lord, what now?” moments.
Like Susan Allen, Co-founder of , my business partner and I are also best friends. So of course, after (and during) the event, we had our own conversation.
One question asked during the event that stuck with us:
What is the hardest part of the founder journey?
For me, it’s the pressure to always be on.
You’re always looking for new opportunities while managing the business, doing the work, and making sure it’s seen and heard. All while still trying to be present in your personal life. It is a lot. And some days, you just want to shut off, but the work has to get done.
For Lee, it was the same thing from a different angle.
He shared that he felt he HAD to always be on. If he didn’t answer an email right away or deliver work immediately, he might miss an opportunity. So he kept working. Constantly. Until he learned that productivity is not just about delivery but also about proper time management. It is about protecting your family life, your health, and your peace.
That conversation reminded us how important it was for us to create boundaries. We both experienced burnout when we lacked it. And with them, we are now more productive and creative than we were before.
Big respect to The Sitdown UK for creating a space where founders could speak honestly and leave feeling seen.
Because behind every business is a person trying and learning as they go.
The founder life aye!
