How to grow as a designer 🌱

Each level requires a different perspective, different skills, and a different way of working with AI.

🌱 Junior Designer — Build your foundation

You’re starting your design career. You may already have skills in tools and ex*****on, which are essential, but to grow, you need to develop your design sense and problem-solving skills. Understand what makes a good design, what works, why it works, and how digital products are actually built.

🌿 Mid-level Designer — Take ownership

Move from completing design tasks to owning problems end to end. Learn how to define an approach, make decisions, collaborate with different disciplines and take work from problem to delivery. Gain experience by solving different problems, tackling new challenges, and learning from different collaborators and stakeholders.

🌳 Senior Designer — Focus on impact

Your responsibility expands beyond the quality of the screens. Ask whether you’re solving the right problem in the first place. Connect user needs with business goals, influence direction and improve how the team approaches problems. Think beyond individual products into systems, frameworks and ways of working.

🌼 Growth isn’t only vertical. Grow horizontally too!

The boundaries of design are becoming increasingly blurred. Adjacent skills can make you a better problem solver. Early-career designers may deepen their craft and ex*****on, while more experienced designers increasingly expand into strategy, business, and systems.

🔪 The role is evolving

Designers aren’t going anywhere, but we need to keep sharpening our skills and thinking to stay relevant. Our value is more than just creating screens. It’s in how we think, solve problems, make decisions, and create impact.

Design the user experience of your portfolio.

Your portfolio is an experience too. Think about the person viewing it: How quickly can they access it, understand your work, and get a sense of who you are?

1. Accessibility
Make your portfolio easy to access. Every extra step creates friction.

Common examples (rookie mistakes):
• A Figma file with no clear organization, leaving recruiters lost between pages and frames, or a Figma link that requires them to sign in
• A Google Drive folder with separate files they need to open one by one
• A portfolio link hidden behind a password
• A file that’s too large for recruiters to view in an email or open on mobile

Especially for UX/UI roles, a website often presents your work and expertise best. And today, it’s easier than ever to build your own portfolio website!

2. Clarity
Make it easy to understand your profile, your work, and your role in each project. Clear structure, hierarchy, and organization matter.

Design for a quick scan. Recruiters may spend only 3–5 minutes on an initial portfolio review, so make sure your strongest work and key information can be understood quickly.

3. Visual
Think of your portfolio like a well-designed exhibition: The space should support the work, not compete with it. Avoid letting excessive decoration, animation, or visual effects distract from your projects. Most importantly, let the quality of your craft show through in the work itself.

4. Relevance
Just like UX, know your target audience. Curate your projects, content, and level of detail around the roles and teams you want to work with.

Make your portfolio relevant to the industry you’re targeting. If you want to work in fintech, for example, show projects involving financial products, complex workflows, trust, or data. Whenever possible, include projects that resemble the products, users, and challenges the company works with.

5. Human
At the end of the day, recruiters and design teams are looking for people they want to work with. Think of every point of connection, from the first email to the interview as part of the experience. Be clear, thoughtful, and personal in how you communicate. Show the same care in your communica

Sand Studio annual outing in Cha-am 🌊

A few days out of the studio, by the sea, with the team.
Got lucky with sunshine every day, even in the middle of rainy season.

📍 บ้านง่ายงาม

First stop for lunch. Japanese food, field views, breezy outdoor seats and a cozy wooden deck. Really liked how quiet and zen this place felt. The slow and soft life we need more of.

📍 Khao Nang Phanthurat Forest Park

A bit of hiking for some nature therapy 🌿 Definitely not the usual place you’ll find our designers.

We took it easy at our own pace. Some made it a little further than others.. Overall, much-needed outdoor time for a little digital detox.

📍 Mola-Mola Beachfront Villa

Our home for two nights. One of the perks of having a small team is we can book out the whole villa and just hang out together 🌴

We hosted our own cyanotype workshop ☀️🌀

Foraged around the beach for anything interesting and turned our finds into art. We always enjoy doing creative workshops together at the studio. A little artsy activity to get creative beyond the screen.

Cyanotype is basically sun printing. You place objects on specially treated paper, leave it out in the sun, and watch it turn deep blue while the objects leave their silhouettes behind 💙

It was our first time trying it too, so there were definitely some hits and misses..but that was part of the fun. Lots of experimenting, figuring things out, and seeing what came out.

Night time 🌙

Game nights and a series of board games. Codenames and Wavelength are our favorites, mostly because we get to see how everyone thinks 💭 Somehow we get to know each other a little better and understand how each other’s minds work.

📍 Wonderfarm (reservation only)

One last lunch stop before heading back to Bangkok. Everything here is homegrown, organic, homemade or freshly caught. A nice meal to end our trip 🍴

Had to show the food because everything was so good! Really fresh ingredients and full of flavor 🌱

Now that we’re well rested and recharged, it’s time to get back to work. See you back in the Figma file 👋

We won, and this one means a lot!! 🏆 Our work for EDSY is a UX Design Award 2026 winner in the Product category, selected from 500+ submissions across 47 countries.

At Sand Studio, we’ve always believed that great UX design goes beyond how a product looks (but yes, we do love making things look really nice). It starts with understanding people, identifying the right problems, and making thoughtful decisions that lead to experiences that are intuitive and useful.

Behind every final ex*****on is the work that often isn’t seen: UX research, design strategy, testing, iteration and countless small decisions that shape the experience. To have that process and its impact recognised on a global stage makes this win particularly special for our team 🫶🏻

At the heart of theCOMMONS is a thoughtfully curated mix of vendors and spaces, bringing together quality producers who take pride in what they do.

We brought this curation into the digital experience, giving every vendor and space a place to be discovered. Interactive floor plans invite visitors to explore and find places that match their mood, lifestyle and moment.
