The craft of capturing thoughts.
Imagine your brain as a boundaryless lake, where hungry beasts thrive. Call these beasts thoughts. They feed on planktons, which are disintegrated, dismissed thoughts. If you want to catch a vibrant beast, you need to toss bait into that lake. So, what would bate would it be? An epiphany? A profound mistake? A regret? An urgent need, and when you catch a vibrant, wiggling thought, what is the next thing you’d do? Put it aside to rest until it slips back into the dark lake, or are you curious enough to look into it, and see if there is an inspiration that would add an insight to previous thoughts?
Capturing thoughts is the basis for virtually every intellectual development.
It can start by writing, or scratching something on a napkin, and if it rings a bell, it can be expanded to make a difference in a discovery or a project that you have been contemplating.
This may seem redundant, but by only following and repeating what is currently topical, you are wasting time and energy that could be used to capture your very own thoughts. Entice your brain with bait, even if it is a borrowed intuition, and capture a fresh thought. These beasts are all there in your brain, waiting to be caught. Keeping an open mind lets the captured thoughts become a rewarding experience.
