Is SEO Dead? The Wrong Question for 2024.

In 2024, the question, "Is SEO dead?" still makes its rounds. Debates rage on about whether SEO takes six months, 12 months, or even 24 months to show results. Yet, these questions miss the mark entirely. Instead of asking whether SEO is still alive or wondering about its timeline, here’s a more important question:

What would you do if you had people on your website today, no matter where they were from, and every single visitor made a purchase?

Would you then ask yourself, Is SEO dead? Does it take 12 months?

Probably not.

When people buy from you, all other questions fade into the background. The real issue isn’t whether SEO is dead or alive; it’s about making the traffic you already have work for you. Let me share two examples:

A project where a keyword had a search volume of just 50 searches a month: This company thrived, becoming profitable with this seemingly insignificant search volume. How? By focusing on what mattered—converting those 50 visits into purchases.

Another project with 100,000 searches and tons of traffic that failed to sell anything: All that traffic meant nothing without conversion. It’s a reminder that more visitors do not guarantee more sales.

It’s Not About Traffic – It’s About Conversion

In 2024, the essential questions are these: Where is my audience? How do I get them to my website? And how do I convert them? If you run an online coffee shop, for instance, the search volume for "coffee" is not necessarily your target audience. Just because someone searches for coffee doesn’t mean they’re ready to buy from you. It doesn’t even mean they’ll purchase at all.

It’s like a neon sign on a 10 x 10 meter screen in the city center, advertising an airline. You can't track if that advertisement converts anyone at all. But it burns that brand into your mind as you drive past it every day. When it comes time to book your next flight, that brand is already integrated into your decision-making process.

SEO works the same way. It’s just a touchpoint—a way to get users to your website. But it is not a purchase signal. It does not guarantee a sale.

The Hard Truth About Conversion Rates

Statistically, conversion rates hover around 2%. That means that for every 100 visitors on your site, 98 will leave without buying anything. If you ran a sales team and 98% of their leads went nowhere, you wouldn’t tolerate it for three months, let alone longer. Yet, when it comes to websites, companies often don’t scrutinize the numbers the same way. Instead, they believe that more traffic will solve everything.

“Ten times the traffic!” you hear people say, as if they could snap their fingers and jump from 50,000 to 500,000 visitors. But here’s the kicker: that 2% conversion rate won’t change just because you have more traffic. You’ll just be burning through more visitors without getting results.

Making the Most of Existing Potential

Rather than chasing more traffic, ask yourself: How can I better use the traffic I already have? If 98% of visitors aren’t buying, are we truly following a strategy, or are we leaving things to chance? It’s hard to call that a successful strategy.

Conversion rates at 2% may sound discouraging, but it’s the reality for many online businesses. The root problem isn’t necessarily SEO; it’s understanding and optimizing for your audience.

Is SEO the Right Channel for You?

SEO has a place in your strategy, but only if it aligns with your target audience and product. You must ask whether SEO is the right fit. Is your website your sole channel? Can SEO bring your target audience to your site effectively?

Generalizations don’t work anymore in 2024. Companies that apply blanket strategies—doing the same thing for every business, every niche—are missing the point. The customer doesn’t fit neatly into a one-size-fits-all approach, and neither should your marketing strategy.

The Changing Digital Landscape

In 2024, every user knows how to place an online order. Every user knows what Amazon is, how subscriptions work, how to navigate social media, and that they’re being bombarded with ads. In fact, around 40% of users have ad blockers installed. The modern user is far from naive, and they won’t just stumble onto your site and buy your product.

Yet, many companies still operate under the assumption that if they come, they will buy. This assumption discredits the modern consumer and leads to failed strategies.

SEO: Alive, but Not a Magic Bullet

So, is SEO dead? That’s the wrong question.

The right question is: Is SEO even suitable for me or my product? Can it bring my target audience to my website? Is my website the only channel I’m using? Is it optimized for conversions?

In 2024, SEO is just one touchpoint among many. It's good to have, but it’s not the whole story. The real focus should be on understanding your audience, finding out where they are, and converting them when they do visit your site.

The truth is, SEO isn’t a magical solution. It’s one piece of a much larger puzzle. Your success in the digital world won’t be defined by SEO alone but by your ability to engage, convince, and convert your audience—wherever they may be.

In this interview, we explore the inspiring story of our guest, who emigrated to Thailand in 2015. With initial years spent absorbing the coastal tranquility before finding a creative haven in Chiang Mai, their migration journey is one of transformation and growth.

A professional with a rich history, our guest once served the then Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, now King Rama X, during his visits to the Outlet Ingolstadt in Germany.

Fast-forward to today, they have channeled their passion for dogs and Marketing into five significant ventures: Straight UP! Digital - a Marketing Agency with dedicated approach, Straight Chat - an AI ChatBot, Straight Press - a Press Release Service as well as Zoe Paws, a platform designed to entertain and educate dog owners, and Zoeta Dogsoul, a deeply personal dog training brand.

Through dedicated work and a refined understanding of canine communication, our guest has developed an innovative approach to dog training that blends traditional methods with a unique energy-based technique.

You emigrated to Thailand in 2015. How was the transition, and how has living in Chiang Mai influenced your work?

Sebastian Stroeller: Initially, I lived on the beach, enjoying the serene environment. In 2017, I moved to Chiang Mai, which became my muse. This city inspires me and provides the strength and ideas to realize my projects. Chiang Mai has a special place in my heart, deeply influencing my professional journey.

Can you tell us about your unique encounter with Thailand's royalty before moving there?

Sebastian Stroeller: Sure! Between 2009 and 2012, I served the Thai King, who was then Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn Rama X, twice at the Outlet Ingolstadt in Germany. I was working as an outlet manager for various fashion brands and attended to his entourage, although the Crown Prince did not buy anything from me personally. Little did I know then that I would emigrate to Thailand a few years later.

Let's dive right into your journey with Straight UP! Digital. Could you share what differentiates your company in the marketing landscape?

Sebastian Stroeller: At Straight UP! Digital, our approach revolves around keeping our core services, like SEO, ads, and social media, under our own roof. Sebastian Stroeller: My journey started in 2004 with my Dalmatian. I initially focused on training methods derived from hunters but sought deeper communication and quality in the relationship with my dog. This culminated in two brands: Zoe Paws for dog entertainment and Zoeta Dogsoul, my passion for dog training.

What was the turning point in your approach to dog training?

Sebastian Stroeller: After my dog passed away in 2016, I had an enlightenment on Koh Chang that revealed the missing part in my methods. Experiencing personal challenges, including a divorce and illness, further deepened my understanding.
