We know the “diversity hires”. We know the “token g**s”. We know the “gender-based ESG quotas” collecting dust in the back pages of sustainability reports. We definitely know the half-hearted IWD posts—we’d recognize that stock photo smile anywhere.
We know because we WERE the diversity hires, the token g**s, and the ESG quota-fillers. We know what being the one person pushed forward every International Women’s Day and Pride Month feels like, only to be put away the day after like holiday fairy lights.
We know what silencing and censoring yourself means in a (not so) Great Place to Work™. Misogyny passing as humor. Being called too “intense” when you object, feeling horrible when you don’t.
That is why Walrus Creative Works was founded: To celebrate and applaud women, NB, LGBTQIA+ not just on a single day but every day. To celebrate us for being proudly us. To create a workplace consisting predominantly of women and thriving.
We are here to create an example so shiny that it is impossible to look away.
We are celebrating today with a touch of humor. We see you, companies with 84% men on your boards creating posts celebrating your diversity hires, and we raise you our own diversity hire celebration post.
We also see you, incredible women doing incredible things every day: In offices, at home, at the parliament, in front of your computers, on the fields. We are endlessly inspired by you, and hope you find inspiration in what we do, too.
Here’s hoping there’s a future for us where diversity hires are a thing of the past, and diversity + inclusion is as widely accepted as, say, petting your dog when it ptptpts you.
