Stiya by Cole Barash / Publised by / Printed by Ofset Yapımevi (.yapimevi)

In his book “Stiya”, Brooklyn based artist, Cole Barash uses a unique hyper-focused approach in a study of two pure forms of raw energy, a Nor’Easter storm and the birth of a child. Through composition and sequence, this work considers the experience of these two worlds as one.

At first, I hadn’t made the connection between the two events and was naturally drawn out into photographing the storm and the aftermath. I spent a few days hiking the dunes, the beaches, the ponds and woods, focusing on areas that had been impacted by the storm and areas that hadn’t changed at all. Later realizing that in its seclusion, the space of a storm can be much like the space of a delivery room. The pressure, the buildup, the excitement and fear that come along with witnessing this incredible transformation of energy. Both spaces exclusive to the elements involved in conceiving the change, I was so curious. What was this going to look like?”

Silent Histories by Kazuma Obara ()

Kazuma Obara’s photobook “Silent Histories” is an affecting, well-researched photographic story of six survivors of the bombings during WWII and the difficulties they faced in post-war Japan.

Through snapshots, vintage portraits, class photos, historical photographs taken during and after the war, replicas of documents and newspapers, the book gathers aspects surrounding the issue of the bombings themselves, Japan’s stance towards its war victims, as well as personal perspectives into a comprehensive, multi-faceted visual story.

The US bombings of Japan in the later years of the Second World War killed hundreds of thousands on the ground and left more than 430’000 people injured and scarred.

After the war, Japan managed (with assistance by the USA’s Marshall Plan) to rebuild and grow to become the second-largest economy in the world during the “Japanese economic miracle” period. Yet those wounded by the war - children especially - found themselves left out of many of the benefits of the new economic growth and were forced into a difficult life without much chance to heal their wounds.

Having to avoid “causing trouble,” they were forced to hide their scars and live in silence. Through this publication, Obara gives voice to six histories that had to keep silent for more than 70 years.

“Between I and Lands is an intimate exploration of return, memory, and belonging.

Twenty years after leaving Tunisia as a child, I returned to reconnect with a homeland that had lived in my dreams but evolved in my absence. Over two years, I retraced places imprinted in my family’s history: Tunis, where I was born; Djerba, the land of my ancestors; and Kerkennah, the site of my childhood summers. Documenting the tension between memory and reality, longing and loss.

Through photographs of etched landscapes and portraits of strangers, this book is a visual ode to reconciliation, uncovering the traces of home’s fragility and the experiences found in returning to it.“
