A brand new generational clash Sparked by Jaguar’s rebranding campaign 🔥

In the past, brand communication revolved around logical narratives. Brands would connect with their heritage, weaving a story that spanned generations. 🕰️

For a legacy brand like Jaguar, this was exactly what you’d expect: a Jaguar passed down from grandfather to father to son… a perfect blend of the elegance of the past and the dynamism of the modern age. ✨

Completely logical, emotional, and meaningful.

And Jaguar’s new identity campaign?

No story. No logic. Not even a car in sight.

Instead, there’s an absurd, detached-from-reality energy that somehow draws you in. With messages like “Copy nothing,” “Delete ordinary,” and “Break moulds,” the brand challenges traditional storytelling and aims to create a “vibe.” 🎨

This, in fact, is the clearest sign of a generational shift.

Millennials expect logical narratives from brands. “Explain to me why I should think or feel this way,” they demand. They seek meaning and consistency. 📖

But Gen Z doesn’t care. What they want is to live in the moment, to break away from the mundane. For them, logic isn’t what matters—"vibes" are. 💫

Jaguar’s new identity and communication strategy are clearly targeting this generation: a bizarre yet captivating energy that disconnects from the dull and the ordinary.

The visual language of this new identity also reflects Jaguar’s new narrative—with its minimalist logo design and vibrant colors and forms that invite us into a surreal world. ✨

This new language isn’t trying to convince us of anything. It just wants us to feel something.

For an 80-year-old brand, this is a radical and bold decision.

Because it seems that millennials have been largely left out of the equation.

And this might explain why traditional X and Y generation marketers are struggling to grasp Jaguar’s new branding concept.

Is all this the right decision? We don’t know yet.

While we can speculate about the intentions and strategy behind it, it would be premature to make sweeping judgments about this bold move without understanding the brand’s broader objectives.

Creating a brand, branding, building a brand. We brand professionals love to say such big words. However, what we call a brand is not something that is done by saying "just do it". First, you will create a sustainable value that really touches people's lives and sets you apart. Then you will ensure that that value is clearly understood and experienced. If everything goes well, first the people whose lives you touched, and then others will start to see you as a "brand". It's easy to say, quite difficult to do, and tedious work. It takes ideas and strategy, it takes creativity, it takes resources and of course, it takes time and patience. But above all, it requires a vision that makes butterflies fly in your stomach.

We are celebrating our 18th year at UBF as a branding agency.
