Spiritual Baptist Liberation Day, a testament to faith’s triumph over oppression. We remember our ancestors who endured decades of persecution under the Shouter Prohibition Ordinance, yet never abandoned their worship. When the Ordinance was repealed on March 30, 1951, freedom was restored, and a vital thread of our national identity was reclaimed.

To the Spiritual Baptist community, we salute your resilience. Your journey from suppression to celebration reminds us that religious freedom must always be protected.

Today, as we welcome the New Year, Texprint Ltd. also marks a significant milestone: our 40th anniversary.

This moment reflects the dream of our late founder, Valentine Tex Surajdeen, who envisioned a small, self-contained printery, not only to provide work for skilled craftsmen in the field, but also to build a lasting legacy for his family. Together with his beloved late wife, Polly, Tex worked tirelessly to grow more than just a business; they built a reputation for integrity and leadership that still defines us today.

When Tex and Polly passed away in 2004, Tex had already seen his dream realized, a company founded on craft, care, and community.

As we extend our warmest New Year’s wishes to our valued customers, friends, and family, we also celebrate four decades of excellence in the printing industry. Thank you for being part of our journey.

A short piece of history:

Many years ago, following his retirement, the esteemed former Police Inspector and conductor of the Police Band, Mr. Guillermo Anthony Prospect (dec.), would visit my late father at Texprint. He came to print music books, a task he approached with remarkable innovation. Long before such technology was commonplace, Inspector Prospect composed using an early Apple 512k Macintosh. He had written his own program, a clever piece of software that translated keystrokes directly into musical notation. This was in the late 1980’s.

During these visits, my youthful curiosity would inevitably surface. I would eagerly ask him about his distinguished career in the Police Service and his various pursuits on retirement. In one particularly memorable conversation with my father and me, he shared a fascinating story of cultural and musical mentorship.

He described training East Indian musicians, particularly harmonium players, to adapt their technique for modern electronic keyboards. As he explained, the traditional harmonium requires the player’s right hand to play the melody while the left hand operates the bellows. Inspector Prospect patiently taught these musicians to liberate their left hand, guiding them to master the coordinated use of both hands on the electric keyboard’s full range.

This anecdote was a perfect illustration of the man himself: a visionary ahead of his time, brilliantly bridging tradition and modernity, all with the warm and affable demeanor for which he was so beloved. He was a true pioneer of Trinidad’s musical landscape.
