R.I.P to a Legend

THE MIGHTY SHADOW – 1941-2018

Winston McGarland Bailey better known by his stage name as The Mighty Shadow was born on 4th October, 1941 in Belmont. He grew up in the village Les Coteaux, Tobago with his grandparents. He began to sing at an early age and he wanted to be a singer although his grandfather told him he must be a lawyer.

He won the Road March in 1974 and 2001 with Bassman and Stranger respectively. He won the Calypso Monarch in 2000 with What’s Wrong With Me and Scratch Meh Back. Known for his unique dance style in which he jumped to the tempo of his music in “skip-rope style” with both feed in the air at the same time. Shadow was the second to win both the International Soca Monarch and the Trinidad Road March competitions simultaneously a feat he accomplished in 2001 with his song Stranger. Some other well-known songs by this talented entertainer are Dingolay, Dat Soca Boat, and Feeling the Feelings.

In 2003 Shadow was awarded the Trinidad and Tobago Humming Bird Medal Silver for his contribution to music. He was to be awarded an honorary Doctorate in the month of October, 2018.
