Stop coasting – the leadership growth framework that keeps ego in check

One of the greatest risks in leadership is not incompetence. It's believing you've already arrived. The moment we start overestimating our skills, experience, or understanding, growth begins to slow. We stop seeking feedback and stop questioning our assumptions. We become more interested in protecting our reputation than improving our capability. In Ego Is the Enemy, Ryan Holiday references a simple but powerful framework popularized by Frank Shamrock called the Plus, Minus, Equal theory....

Performative Leadership: A Warning for Organizations and Society

Conducting business today can sometimes feel like living in the Twilight Zone, where reality seems slightly distorted and things that would once have been considered absurd are accepted without question. Behaviors that once would have been questioned, challenged, or dismissed have become normalized. Civility is increasingly treated as optional. Good sense is often overshadowed by outrage and substance struggles to compete with spectacle....

Running a business is a lot like the Netflix survival series Outlast

Every day presents a new challenge. You wake up not entirely sure what you're going to face. A client delays payment. A key employee leaves. A proposal you were counting on goes nowhere. A competitor makes a move you didn't anticipate. Something that should have taken a week takes a month. You make plans, but the terrain gets a vote....

What is the Point?

Feeling like there is no obvious point to it all is a deeply human experience, especially during overwhelming times. And these current times are if nothing else - overwhelming. With 24/7 news cycles, rapid technological shifts, and global volatility, it is completely normal to feel overstimulated and at the same time wondering what exactly is the point of anything. There are many instances on any given day when we have all sincerely asked as business owners and leaders -...

Time Is One of the Few Things Nobody Actually Manages

Time management has been a staple of professional development for decades. Entire industries have been built around planners, productivity systems, prioritization matrices, and techniques designed to help people "manage their time." Yet despite all of this effort, many people feel busier, more overwhelmed, and more stretched than ever. Perhaps that is because time is one of the few things nobody actually manages....

Confidence Vs. Competence

The Dunning-Kruger Effect is often explained as a problem of overconfidence. People with limited knowledge or experience overestimate their competence, while those with greater expertise are more aware of complexity, uncertainty, and the limits of their own understanding. What interests me is not the overconfident person. What interests me is everyone listening to them....

Emotional Intelligence Deserves More Respect in Business. Here’s Why.

When emotional intelligence is discussed in business, it is often treated as a nice-to-have. Important, perhaps, for leadership development, communication, or team dynamics, but rarely viewed with the same seriousness as strategy, finance, operations, sales, or technology. Yet many of the challenges organizations struggle with most involve how effectively people understand themselves, understand others, and use emotional information when making decisions, navigating relationships, and responding to challenges....

Did You Know School Meant Leisure & Business Meant Care?

I recently learned that the word school comes from the ancient Greek word skholē, meaning leisure, spare time or rest. Learning, discussion, debate and philosophy were activities people pursued when they had enough space away from the demands of daily work. Over time, the word evolved to describe the conversations themselves, the people involved in them, and eventually the place where instruction occurred....

Are you comfortable being challenged as a leader?

Most leaders would answer yes. The better question is whether the people around them believe it. Leadership requires making decisions in the absence of complete information. Every day, leaders form conclusions about customers, employees, competitors, market conditions, priorities, and risk. Those conclusions become assumptions, and assumptions become the foundation upon which decisions are made. There is nothing inherently wrong with that process....

What causes talented people, strong teams and successful organizations to lose their way?

I'm currently reading Creativity, Inc. by Ed Catmull, former President of Pixar Animation and Disney Animation. In his introduction he shares: What makes Pixar special is that we acknowledge we will always have problems, many of them hidden from our view; that we work hard to uncover these problems, even if doing so means making ourselves uncomfortable; and that, when we come across a problem, we marshal all of our energies to solve it....
