Liddicoatite is a rare and vibrant member of the tourmaline group, typically cut into crystal cross-sections to showcase their striking color zoning. Found mainly in Madagascar and Brazil, this gem was named in honor of Richard T. Liddicoat, the “father of modern gemology” and former GIA president.
Liddicoat revolutionized gemstone education by developing the GIA International Diamond Grading System™, which introduced the 4Cs of diamond quality and the D-to-Z color scale. His foundational Handbook of Gem Identification, first published in 1947, was used by gemologists worldwide and helped standardize gem identification across both diamonds and colored gemstones. The GIA Museum proudly showcases liddicoatite specimens, celebrating both the gem’s unique beauty and Liddicoat’s lasting impact on gemology.
