My first logo workshop in conjunction with Solfrid Raknes to assist in the identity development of the Uhuru Mama Collective. This collective consists of 30 mothers of disabled children who wait at school while the children attend. Solfrid Raknes identified an opportunity to better the lives of these women by encouraging them to create handcrafted items while waiting at the school. She established a space for them and with careful relationship and trust building this collective grew.
In Tanzania, having a disabled child is seen as a curse and men would often abandon their families. These women are often single mothers with limited ability to work as their children need full time care. By creating a collective run by them they can improve their financial standing and care for their children better.
During the logo work shop we explored the word 'Mama' and the women contributed words that to them embodies a 'Mama'. This was done through a translator as they mainly speak Kiswahili. We then distributed paper and drawing materials and asked the women to explore each word visually. Each women was asked to come and explain what they had drawn in front of the forum.
The drawings where collected, scanned in and arranged in matching themes and from here eight logo options where developed. These options where then shown to the women and they voted on the final choice. They also came up with the tagline 'Safari ya mtoto' which translates to 'Journey with your child'.
Marketing materials where then developed and they participated, successfully, in their first market.
Some key takeouts from this experience:
1. Go back to the roots and listen to your client.
2. Never start the design process with an outcome in mind.
3. Don't underestimate the value of local insight, gathered straight from the source.
4. Some themes are universal, the fact that we do not speak the same language or fall in the same economic bracket does not mean we dont have the same ideas.
5. Involve the client in the process, you will have a better understanding of their needs and you will have better buy in.
Hoping we can repeat this process and make a difference in more lives.
