Pac-Man in space / NASA
In 2021, an image of the cosmic Pac-Man - the gaseous remains of an ancient supernova star - has been imaged, taking on a shape instantly recognizable to fans of the classic video game. The object, officially known as N 63A, is the product of a star that collapsed under its own weight in the not too distant Large Magellanic Cloud, 163,000 light years from the Milky Way.

Clusters of galaxies are the largest known structures in the universe, bound together by gravity. They can contain thousands of galaxies, huge clouds of hot gas, and sometimes glowing ghosts of one or two jellyfish. In the Abell 2877 cluster of galaxies, located in the southern sky about 300 million light-years from Earth, astronomers found one such jellyfish. The space jellyfish, visible only in a narrow band of radio light, is more than 1 million light-years wide.

Planet with three stars / ESO
This past year, scientists discovered compelling evidence that the rarest type of planet in the universe -- a single world orbiting three stars simultaneously -- is at the tip of the huge gas nose of the constellation Hunters.

In 2019, researchers published the first (and so far only) photo of a supermassive black hole, a giant object that is about 6.5 billion times more massive than the Sun and located about 55 million light-years from Earth in the Messier 87 galaxy.

The center of the Milky Way functions as a giant particle gas pedal, ejecting rays of charged matter, called cosmic rays, into the universe at near-light speed. When the researchers tried to map the density of cosmic rays near the center of the galaxy in a study published Nov. 9 in Nature Communications, they found something puzzling: Even as cosmic rays pulsed out of the center of the galaxy en masse, a mysterious "barrier" emerged, keeping most of the incoming cosmic rays from hitting the center. The team could only speculate as to the source of this cosmic ray barrier, but speculated.

Black hole in the center of the galaxy / NASA
The Lion I dwarf galaxy is about 820,000 light-years from Earth, and its diameter is only about 2,000 light-years. Until now, astronomers thought the galaxy had a mass about 15 to 30 million times that of our Sun. This is tiny compared to the Milky Way, which is estimated to weigh 1.5 trillion suns and whose disk is more than 100,000 light-years wide.

Void in the Milky Way / ESA
Two gas clouds, both of equal size, appear side by side in the beautiful Milky Way. These vast regions of star-forming gas, known as "molecular clusters," stretch across the sky, forming a bridge between the constellations of Ta**us and Perseus. This is a celestial tale of star-crossed love, and, according to recent research, it is also a huge optical illusion.

Magnetic tunnel / ESA
Earth, along with the rest of the solar system and some nearby stars, may be trapped inside a giant magnetic tunnel -- and astronomers don't know why. A tube of huge magnetized tendrils 1,000 light-years long, invisible to the naked eye, may surround the solar system, astronomers suggested in a paper on the arXiv preprint database

Spaghettification of a star / NASA
Black holes are messy eaters. When a hapless star gets too close to one of these voracious objects, the black hole's extreme gravity pulls the star into the shape of a long noodle in a process called "spaghettification." In May, researchers saw this messy process for the first time when a black hole, 750 million light-years from Earth and weighing 30 million times the mass of the Sun, grabbed a passing star in its clutches. The catastrophic encounter produced a bright flash of optical light, X-rays.and radio waves that can be clearly detected by telescopes on Earth.
