The internet and mobile devices have brought about more ways to read than ever before. While physical books still hold a healthy appeal for some readers, it’s not always a convenient way to consume a story. Now, numerous devices, apps, websites, and online stores offer up novels and other forms of fiction (and nonfiction) to readers, in formats ranging from print books to ebooks, audiobooks, and experimental platforms.

One of the biggest fantasy novels of 2019, Black Leopard, Red Wolf, comes from Man Booker award-winning author Marlon James. Inspired by African folklore, James’ latest novel has earned considerable acclaim since its release earlier this year. Next week, he will appear at the Jean Cocteau Cinema in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to discuss the book with Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, and it will be moderated by Andrea L. Mays.

Pick a card, any card, and you might feel that you’re in control when you pull the queen of hearts from a magician’s deck. But magicians have strategies that force their audience’s choice — from packing the deck with identical cards, to fanning out the deck with just the right timing so that the choice becomes all but inevitable.

This illusion of free will is one of the many illusions and magic tricks that Gustav Kuhn, a magician turned psychology researcher at Goldsmiths, University London, describes in his new book Experiencing the Impossible: The Science of Magic. Published in March by The MIT Press, the book explores the ways in which magic tricks and illusions can teach us about our brains. Kuhn takes the reader into the psychological underpinnings of tricks — from optical illusions that reveal gaps in perception, to failures of memory that make people think they’ve seen a ball vanish, when in fact there was no ball to see in the first place.

‘What happens inside your brain when you’re experiencing something that you know to be impossible?’

At the same time, publishers are also scrambling to get their own editions of the report into bookstores and onto ebook platforms as quickly as possible. Skyhorse Publishing, Scribner, Melville House, Audible, and Barnes & Noble will all be publishing their own editions of the final report. Some ebook editions could arrive as soon as tomorrow (Scribner confirmed to The Verge that it expects to release its edition Friday), while print editions could take up to two weeks. Skyhorse has said that it plans to begin shipping its print edition “about 7 days from release,” while Scribner has said that it hopes to have its print edition out by April 26th. Melville House wants its version out “in no more than 10 days,” while Barnes & Noble says that its “special editions with related materials in print” will hit stores the week of the April 29th. Audible lists its edition for April 30th.

With printed editions to follow in the coming weeks

Neuromancer author William Gibson famously wrote the script for a sequel to James Cameron’s Aliens years ago, but was ultimately never filmed — we got Alien³ instead. Last year, Dark Horse Comics resurrected the script for a new comic book, and now, the script is getting another adaptation, this time as an audio drama from Audible.

Gibson’s Alien III is set after the events of Aliens, and picks up the story of Ripley, Hicks, Newt, and what’s left of the android Bishop, as they arrive in the territory of the Union of Progressive Peoples, a Soviet Union-like nation. They’re boarded by the soldiers, and as one might expect, a face-hugger latches on to one of them, and everyone has to deal with an infestation of Xenomorphs. Gibson’s script isn’t exactly a long-lost secret: it’s floated around the internet for years, but an audio drama will bring it nearly to what it was originally intended.

The Star Wars franchise famously includes a wide range of mediums beyond just the films — numerous books, comics, and games fill in the untold corners of the galaxy, and have set up the world for the coming installments. Lucasfilm just unveiled its publishing slate that will lead to the next film, The Rise of Skywalker, and it includes a novel that will bridge the gap from The Last Jedi, written by author Rebecca Roanhorse.

Coming between October and December, before the final film is released

The Folio Society announced the book earlier this spring, but the exciting bit of news for bookshelf purists is that the publisher revealed that it’s going to be doing the rest of the series as well: A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, and A Dance with Dragons (and, whenever Martin finishes them, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring). Readers who preorder the book now will get a copy from the first print run. The publisher didn’t say when the sequels will follow, only that they will come eventually, after they’ve worked on finishing the art and design of each installment.

Make room on your bookshelf.
