Furong Ancient Town, Hunan - Where a Waterfall Flows Through Town
Unlike any other old towns in China, Furong Ancient Town (芙蓉古镇) is literally built on a waterfall!
Imagine strolling through a town with a thundering waterfall rushing right beneath (and sometimes through!) its ancient buildings – it's an experience straight out of a dream and easily one of the most beautiful places in China to visit!
Here, you can walk a special boardwalk behind the waterfall, getting a "water curtain cave" view that's absolutely magical. When night falls, the town lights up, reflecting off the water curtain in a way that feels utterly mystical.
As you wander, you'll see traditional Tujia stilted houses, home to the Tujia minority. You might even catch their lively singing, dancing, traditional wedding performances, or try your hand at tie-dyeing in a local workshop. This isn't just sightseeing; it's a deep dive into local culture!
Best time to visit? Go June to August (summer!).
