Astronomers have discovered a vast structure in our galaxy, made up of many interconnected "nurseries" where stars are born.

The long, thin filament of gas is a whopping 9,000 light-years long and 400 light-years wide.

It lies around 500 light-years from our Sun, which is relatively close by in astronomical distances.

The discovery, outlined in the journal Nature, came from work to assemble a new map of the Milky Way.

An international team analysed data from the European Gaia space telescope, which was launched in 2013.

Dr Cordiner added that Alma had previously observed discs of dust and gas - from which planets are formed - surrounding young low-mass stars similar to the Sun.

"Many of these discs extend well beyond the region where our own comets are believed to have formed, and contain large amounts of extremely cold gas and dust. It is possible that 2I/Borisov came from one of these larger discs."

Dr Bodewits offered a distinct take, arguing the comet could have originated around a red dwarf star, the most common type in the Milky Way galaxy. "These stars have exactly the low temperatures and luminosities where a comet could form with the type of composition found in comet Borisov," he explained.

Dr Laporte said that obtaining the result was a dream come true.

"It is fantastic to think that particles of light have been travelling through space for over 13 billion years and then entered a telescope. The wonderful thing about being an astrophysicist is the ability to time travel and witness the distant past," he explained.

The Universe came into being 13.8 billion years ago in the Big Bang. After an initial flash, it went through a period known as the cosmic dark ages. According to the new study, 250 to 350 million years after the Big Bang, the first stars emerged, bringing light to the cosmos.

Perseverance was sent to Mars to investigate a 45km-wide bowl called Jezero Crater.

It's a location thought to have held a lake billions of years ago.

It also has on its western fringe the remnants of a delta.

This is a structure created from the silt and sand dumped by a river as it slows on entry into a wider body of water.

It's the kind of feature that might just have trapped evidence of past microbial organisms.

Perseverance has drilled a mix of volcanic and sedimentary rocks that should tell the story of the crater and the lake it once held. Examples of those rocks are now in the depot on a flat piece of terrain dubbed "Three Forks".

It has been visible to those in the Northern Hemisphere through binoculars for the past few weeks, but will be closest to Earth - and brightest - on Wednesday.

"Comets are notoriously unpredictable, but if this one continues its current trend in brightness, it'll be easy to spot," Nasa said on its blog earlier this month.

"It's just possible it could become visible to the unaided eye under dark skies."

The icy celestial body - called C/2022 E3 (ZTF), a "mouthful of a name", according to Nasa - is making its closest approach to the sun on 12 January before making its closest approach to Earth on 2 February.

"With these tools you can crush better than an elephant's molar can and cut better than a lion's canine can," said Prof Rick Potts, of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, a senior author of the study.

"Oldowan technology was like suddenly evolving a brand new set of teeth outside your body, and it opened up a new variety of foods on the African savannah to our ancestors."

"The association of these Nyayanga tools with Paranthropus may reopen the case as to who made the oldest Oldowan tools. Perhaps not only Homo, but other kinds of hominins were processing food with Oldowan technology," said anthropologist Thomas Plummer of Queens College in New York City, lead author of the research published in the journal Science.

The base and its 21 occupants are all secure. Officials see no need for an evacuation.

Concerns had been expressed that a major Emperor penguin colony near the breakaway could have been disrupted.

The Emperors breed on sea-ice attached to the coast - so-called "fast ice".

But the new Sentinel-2 picture clearly shows the stains from the birds' excrement, or guano, to be on an ice platform that remains intact.
