More than once the bird was declared extinct. At the beginning of the XX century, the species was still considered common, but due to changes in habitat, the number of birds decreased sharply.
They are distributed only on the Hawaiian Islands. In the historical era, 32 species of Hawaiian flower girls lived, 15 of which are probably extinct.
