Scientists say they now have some absolute numbers to describe the internal rock structure of Mars.

The data comes from the InSight spacecraft, which has been sensing quakes on the planet since early 2019.

The Nasa-led mission reveals the average thickness of Mars' crust to be between 24km and 72km - somewhat thinner than had been expected.

But the key finding is the size of the planet's core. Its radius of 1,830km is at the top end of previous estimates.

Setting up a Manx office is a "real first step" in progressing proposals for a wind farm off the coast of the Isle of Man, a power company has said.

Danish firm Orsted signed an agreement for lease of the seabed off Maughold with the government in 2015.

Development director for the project John Galloway said an island base would ensure it was "designed locally and sensitively" to the community.

It is thought the project could be in operation within six to 10 years.

A mission to study a moon of Jupiter that could be home to extra-terrestrial life has been given a launch date.

Nasa is sending a spacecraft to the icy world of Europa, which holds an ocean under its frozen outer shell.

Scientists have long regarded the moon as one of the most promising targets in the search for life elsewhere in our Solar System.

The Europa Clipper spacecraft will now launch to the jovian moon in October 2024, arriving in April 2030.

But it's complicated by how we define success and failure.

For instance: a few years ago we learned that the British-built Beagle 2 probe - which failed to phone home after plunging through the Martian atmosphere on 25 December 2003 - had actually reached the surface intact.

Images from Nasa's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter suggested that one of the four spacecraft "petals", on which the solar panels were mounted, failed to open. This prevented the deployment of its antenna - and the possibility of communication with Earth.

Block 5 will now become the mainstay of SpaceX's operations. What is more, the vehicle has been built to the "over-engineered" and fault-tolerant standards demanded for human use.

The first astronauts to ride the rocket should do so within the year.

Friday's mission lifted clear of the pad at the Kennedy Space Center at 16:14 local time (21:14 BST).

Separation of the first and second stages took place just over two minutes later, with the upper-stage and the Bangabandhu-1 satellite continuing to orbit - and the booster returning to Earth to make a controlled landing.

This well-practised procedure saw the first-stage put itself down on a barge a

"A delta is extremely good at preserving bio-signatures - any evidence of life that might have existed in the lake water, or at the interface of the sediment and the lake water, or possibly things that lived in the headwaters region that were swept in by the river and deposited in the delta," he told reporters.

Jezero's multiple rock types, including clays and carbonates, have high potential to preserve the organic molecules that would hint at life's bygone existence.

This is now the seventh satellite the EU has lofted in its ambitious Copernicus programme, which seeks to put the biggest volume of Earth observation data ever acquired into the hands of policymakers, scientists, businesses and the general public.

Everything the Sentinels observe is open information that anyone in the world can access with a computer and an internet connection.
