The aim is to reach this goal by 2030 and conserve forests and other vital ecosystems in order to restore the natural world.

The "30x30" target is the key ambition of the UN biodiversity summit, COP 15

But as the talks in Montreal, Canada, move into their final days, there is division over this and many other targets.

It fears discoloured water, seen by Harbour Commissioners entering Whitehaven Harbour from a culvert in Queens Dock, may be from old mines.

Investigations by the Environment Agency and Coal Authority are ongoing.

The company was given the go ahead by the government to become the UK's first new deep coal mine for decades and will provide coking coal for steel making.

In the past five years West Cumbria Mining Ltd has employed geologists and engineers to carry out exploration and analysis work.

This includes drilling boreholes, onshore and offshore, to recover coal samples.

"With these tools you can crush better than an elephant's molar can and cut better than a lion's canine can," said Prof Rick Potts, of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, a senior author of the study.

"Oldowan technology was like suddenly evolving a brand new set of teeth outside your body, and it opened up a new variety of foods on the African savannah to our ancestors."

Mammals curator Mark Brayshaw said both mother and baby were "doing great".

The species is only found in the wild in the treetops of north-west Madagascar and had suffered an 80% decline in the last 30 years due to widespread deforestation.

They are distinguishable from other lemurs because of the way they move, maintaining an upright posture and spring side to side along the floor on their back legs.

Prof Croft described it as a "new insight into the complex social lives and family lives of these amazing animals".

The decades-long study, published in the journal Current Biology, is part of an ongoing mission to understand killer whale family life.

It was made possible by the Center for Whale Research (CWR), which has followed the lives of a population of killer whales, known as the Southern Residents, for more than 40 years.

Ministers gathered at the Grand Palais Éphémère (GPE) in Paris are sure therefore to focus their investments in the programmes expected to generate the biggest economic returns.

One area where there will be intense negotiation concerns rockets. Europe's new launcher, Ariane-6, has fallen behind in its scheduled introduction and won't make a debut until the end of next year at the earliest. That has a knock-on cost, for which the ministerial meeting will have to find €200m of cover.

A carved stone discovered in Caithness could help archaeologists shed new light on the development of Pictish symbols.

A woman researching her family history spotted the partly covered stone while looking at graves in a cemetery in Ulbster.

The stone is thought to date from about the 6th Century and has been taken to a safe place to be cleaned and studied.

He added: "Enhancing our understanding of not just Devon, but also Britain's ancient history, the archaeological work at Sherford continues to be fascinating.

"We are thrilled to work on these important historic investigations, and hope the findings at Sherford help to encourage everyone to take an interest in local history and secrets under the soil."

And by extension, this suggested planet formation would also have been possible in the early Universe, at Cosmic Dawn, explained Dr Margaret Meixner, an astronomer at the Universities Space Research Association in Maryland, US.

"The metallicity in the Small Magellanic Cloud is comparable to the peak epoch of star formation in the Universe. That's when we're basically producing most of the stars in the Universe. And so this is very interesting because that means that you could potentially be forming planets around a bulk of the stars," the researcher said.

It's here, at temperatures down to about -260C, that Webb is detecting types of ice grains not previously observed.

Eventually, such clouds will collapse to form stars and, around them, planets. And the chemistry being spied by Webb will be incorporated.

You can see this in action at top-left of the image.

The orange "hourglass" feature is a protostar - a star in the mode of formation, pulling material from the cloud on to itself.

The remote-controlled robot, called COBRA, has previously been used in jet engineering and nuclear plants.

The University of Nottingham, which developed the robot, has secured funding to make the robot the first of its kind in the UK.

Prof Dragos Axinte said: "We have started early tests to see if the robot can... perform surgical procedures."

The researchers, who are collaborating with Rolls-Royce, said they had secured funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council to adapt COBRA for use in surgery - specifically throat cancer and injury surgery.

"These large igneous provinces, as we call them, coincided with changes in the climate and also mass extinctions," explained Prof Ferreira.

Nothing on that scale looks like it is about to happen under the area studied by Upflow, fortunately. But it's thought still to be an excellent laboratory.

Its siting was close to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where some of Earth's tectonic plates meet. The nearby continent of Africa would also influence how plumes would flow. The Upflow team hopes to publish its imagery in the next couple of years.
