Back in October I went to Dubai for a few days to visit Nigel and Kristina and get some sunshine and warmth before the British winter. We went to various bars and restaurants, but one of my favourite days was when we drove down to Abu Dhabi in Nigel’s fancy new Porsche (they are living the LIFE out there) to Abu Dhabi to spend the day at Saadiyat Beach Club.

I’ve been to Dubai a few times now to visit Nige and Kristina, and written about my favourite bars and clubs, and my perfect 48 hour guide to Dubai before, so I didn’t want to go overboard on the Dubai content. But I did want to tell you all about Saadiyat Beach Club, and I also have an exciting restaurant review coming up for you all!

Jemima and I have been friends for almost a decade. We first met through blogging back in 2013 when I hosted a blogger’s night out, and ever since then our shared love for food and dancing has taken us to many of London’s hottest restaurants and nightlife spots, and in 2018 we even went to Marrakech together!

Seeing as we hadn’t had a girl’s night out since before the pandemic started in 2020, we jumped at the opportunity to experience Sumosan Twiga, an upscale restaurant and club in Knightsbridge.

Sumosan Twiga offers a contemporary dining space featuring black and bronze accents inspired by colonial Africa mixed with classic European stucco. The restaurant first opened in 2016 and offers its clientele the best of Japanese flavours and the finest of Italian cuisine!

For a less formal atmosphere and a more relaxed dining experience, you can eat in the bar upstairs which offers an extensive cocktail menu alongside an a la carte menu. We dined in the restaurant though, and absolutely loved it! It had the perfect balance of feeling upscale but with a party atmosphere.

The pretty Georgian manor house, all honeyed Bath stone, sits at the end of an avenue of sky-high beech and lime trees, surrounded by gardens like a Jane Austen film set. On the grounds there’s a personable cottage for weekending families, a world-class equestrian center, and a serious cooking school. But you don’t have to whip up your own supper. Chef Hywel Jones plates up exquisite food in his eponymous restaurant. That in itself is a reason to stay. So are the roaring fires, the paneled libraries, the canopied four-poster beds, and the moody oil paintings. A purposeful drive in recent years to make the place feel less formal has resulted in a cheery bounce in the staff's step, a raising of chatter levels to almost a hum in the evenings, and a relaxed atmosphere where you can wear your robe down to the ESPA spa and back again without feeling like a terrible slob. Eagle-eyed guests will spot the curious Greek elements dotted around—the urns in the bathroom, the Acropolis paintings in the dining room, the Hellenic motif on the plates. This country retreat feels resonant and rooted, delightfully British to the core.
