SSTL has pioneered the application of so-called COTS - "commercial off-the-shelf" - components. It's how the company opened up the market for small satellites, bringing down costs by reaching for solutions in the consumer electronics industry.

You cannot put anything in orbit however and just expect it to work; reliability in the harsh of environment of space is hard won. But, at the same time, not everything needs to be gold-plated.

The primary mission of DoT-1, launched in July, is to prove the performance of a new Core Data Handling System (Core-DHS). This avionics package is the brains of the satellite, consolidating among other equipment the main computer, GPS, the attitude and orbit control system, and the radio transmitter and receiver.

Nobel Laureate Prof Didier Queloz, from the universities of Cambridge and Geneva, said the goal of Cheops was to improve our ideas for how planets were created.

He told the BBC: "We have built a whole theory of planet formation by observing only the eight planets of our Solar System, but by extending our observations to other kinds of planets that have no counterpart in our Solar System - we should be able to add the missing parts of this theory and get, let's say, a bigger perspective on how we actually fit in."

Perseverance has spent most of its first three weeks on Mars going through post-landing checks. It has, though, started driving in a north-easterly direction.

An immediate goal is a helicopter experiment. The rover brought a small chopper with it from Earth.

The vehicle is looking for a suitable stretch of terrain where the 2kg device, called Ingenuity, can be put safely on the ground. At present, the aircraft is slung beneath Perseverance's belly.

Richard Ghail, principal investigator on the European Space Agency's EnVision mission, told BBC News: "This research shows that we have a lot to learn from Venus and that there is a much wider spectrum of surface mobility than just plate tectonics."

The researchers used data gathered by Nasa's Magellan spacecraft, launched in 1989 and active until 1994, to map the surface structures, which they have named "campi", from the Latin for "field", "campus".

Traditionally, Venus's lithosphere - its rocky outer layer - was thought to be in one continuous piece, in contrast to the Earth's, which is broken up into a mosaic of mobile tectonic plates.

The European Space Agency's (Esa) Gaia satellite was launched in 2013 and placed a million miles from Earth.

It looks a bit like a spinning top hat. And as it rotates, the telescope uses its British-built billion-pixel camera to track everything that shines or moves - with astonishing accuracy.

This is especially important when trying to measure distances to objects, which Gaia achieves by tracking how these targets wobble ever so slightly on the sky as it circles the Sun - a neat form of trigonometry that has now been practised on 1.8 billion stars in, or very near, our Milky Way galaxy.

Local archaeologist Marie Woods stumbled across the print while collecting shellfish on the shore in April 2021. She said she "couldn't believe" what she was looking at.

"I had to do a double take. I have seen a few smaller prints when out with friends, but nothing like this," she added.

It later emerged a local fossil collector, Rob Taylor, had also spotted the print five months earlier when the track was not yet fully exposed.

Another budget line to watch is the €750m requested for the European Union's Iris2 "secure connectivity" constellation. The European Commission wants to develop a network of broadband internet satellites not unlike the ones being rolled out now by the American entrepreneur Elon Musk and the London company OneWeb, but focussed on government services. Its overall cost will probably nudge €6bn, and Brussels is looking to Esa countries for support.

It's worth emphasising that that the European Space Agency is not the European Union. They may share member states and cooperate on certain space projects, but they are distinct legal entities.
