Crucially, THR is only reporting that the film is “in development,” and there’s no mention of it having been officially greenlit or entering production. But the news makes sense in an environment where studios are increasingly turning to video games for IP to mine for their upcoming projects. In recent years, plans to develop films based on everything from triple-A titles like Metal Gear Solid to indie darlings like Firewatch have been announced, and in the more immediate future we have Chris Pratt’s live-action Mario to worry about.

The latest video game to get Hollywood interest.

It’sIt’s exceedingly rare that a product actually gets better months after it was released. But Microsoft’s oft-forgotten Surface Duo 2, which launched back in October 2021 with a steep price tag and a laundry list of bugs and issues that made it very frustrating to use, has bucked that trend. In fact, the Duo 2 has improved so much that it’s now one of my favorite mobile devices, even if it’s still weird and unique enough that I can’t exactly recommend it to most people.

The rare product that actually got better after launch.

There’s no word yet on whether Ben Schwartz will return in the titular role, or whether director Jeff Fowler, or writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller will be back either. This release date, though, puts it directly up against James Cameron’s second Avatar sequel, currently being produced under the working title Avatar 3. It’s the blue CGI character showdown we’ve all been waiting for.

Where it’ll compete against the third Avatar film.

Here’s the thing, though: the Pixel 4A and 4A 5G were already really good midrange phones, and rather than messing with a winning formula, Google has made some strategic tweaks to keep the 5A at the top of its class. Even better, the 5A costs $449 — $50 less than the 4A 5G’s introductory price.

Strategic updates that keep it at the top of the class.

OnePlusOnePlus has changed a lot. The brand originally started out by releasing a single flagship phone a year sold at a substantially lower price to its more established competitors. Lately that’s less true. It now has multiple flagship smartphones, like the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro that are priced similarly to rivals from Samsung, and it also offers a lineup of around half a dozen mid-range and affordable smartphones under its Nord brand from its UK store.

At just £299 (€349) the OnePlus Nord CE 2 is about as affordable as the lineup gets in Europe. (The company says it’s not releasing this specific model in the US, where OnePlus sells a different lineup of Nord phones). The Nord CE 2 is pitched as a step down version of last year’s Nord 2, where the “CE” in its name stands for “Core Edition.” In other words, it’s a device focussed on the core essentials of a modern smartphone. That means good battery life, fast charging, a fast refresh-rate display, and good-enough cameras. There’s also a headphone jack. Bliss.

An affordable phone that ticks lots of boxes.

OnceOnce a sub-brand of Chinese phone giant Huawei, Honor has been going it alone since being spun out in late 2020. So far, it’s released the midrange Honor 50 globally, but various difficulties have prevented the company from coming out with a true flagship smartphone in the west since becoming an independent company. It even went as far as to announce global pricing for the Magic3 last August, but the phone ended up only being available in China.

That changes with this year’s Magic4 Pro, which will be available to preorder in the UK from May 13th and will ship on May 27th from £949.99. (Honor says it currently has no plans to release the phone in the US.) It’s a price point that sees Honor’s phone compete directly with Samsung’s excellent Galaxy S22 Plus, the 256GB storage variant of Google’s accomplished Pixel 6 Pro, and Apple’s ever-reliable iPhone 13 Pro. Those are three excellent choices for prospective phone buyers and represent tough competition for Honor’s latest.

Not quite a fully cohesive package

InIn 2022, there are two radically different sides to Oppo’s sub-brand OnePlus. On the premium end, it has the OnePlus 10 Pro: a flagship-priced, flagship-specced handset that struggles to offer truly flagship-level performance. But things are going a lot better for its Nord lineup, whose few shortcomings are justified by their midrange price tags.

OnePlus’ latest Nord device for Europe is the OnePlus Nord 2T. It’s priced starting at £369 (€399, around $458) for a version with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and rising to £469 (€499, around $582) for 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage (the model I’ve been using). It’s a device that plays to OnePlus’ usual strengths with speedy 80W fast-charging, a colorful 90Hz OLED display, and a physical alert slider switch for hopping into silent and vibrate modes.

A similar feature set doesn’t spoil this capable performer.

From time to time, I’ll grab a random device out of the Verge reviews closet and spend a week or two with it. It’s mostly out of random curiosity and for the sake of comparing “old” products against the latest and greatest. Most recently, I was drawn to Google’s Pixel 5. So I gave it a factory reset, updated the phone to Android 12, and have been using it as my daily driver for the past several days.

The small, standout Pixel has only gotten better with time.

Pitting the 12S Ultra side by side against some of the current class leaders in smartphone cameras, there are clear situations where the bigger sensor makes a difference. But more than anything, it highlights just how advanced imaging systems from Apple, Google, and Samsung are, even with smaller sensors. The future of mobile imaging won’t be won with better hardware alone.

First, let’s get some housekeeping out of the way. A 1-inch-type sensor is often referred to as a 1-inch sensor to make life easier, but that does not mean the sensor literally measures one inch across or diagonally. It’s an old naming convention that has something to do with TV camera tubes. What matters here is that a 1-inch-type sensor is a lot smaller than what you’ll find in a full-frame camera but significantly bigger than the sensor in just about every other smartphone camera. It’s the same size as the sensors used by Sony’s RX100 series cameras — so putting a 1-inch sensor in a smartphone camera potentially puts it on level ground with the best traditional pocketable cameras money can buy.

It’s the real deal.
