The world of watches can be a daunting one to the uninitiated. Balance wheels, escapements, lugs and tourbillons are just a few of the baffling, watch geek terms liable to throw you for a loop if you are just starting out. Don’t be put off however. This is a world that will reward your time (forgive the pun), and Vogue is here to guide you through the process of choosing the perfect timepiece for you.

One luxury watches, like jewellery, were traditionally viewed as gift items. Not anymore. More women than ever are buying their own, be it to celebrate a birthday, a promotion or just for the hell of it. “We’re seeing more women than ever buy for themselves. It could be an easy fashion piece with a fun coloured strap, all the way up to a collector’s piece,” says Elizabeth von der Goltz, chief commercial officer at Matchesfashion.com (who almost always wears her beloved Audemars Piguet).

Hollie Harding, buying manager of non-apparel at Browns, has seen watch sales increase since the pandemic, with customers choosing to invest in something they will treasure forever. “We find that our customers stay true to the brands they know, love and trust, and are choosing to invest in a piece that’s one off and unique,” she explains.

While her otherworldly Versace creation for 2018’s Heavenly Bodies theme, complete with giant angel wings, was by far her most fireworks-worthy moment to date, Perry has made other notable appearances. In 2017, for the Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons exhibition, she leaned into the avant-garde aesthetic of the night with a custom gown by Maison Margiela and a full embroidered veil designed by John Galliano. A year earlier, for Manus X Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, she accessorised her custom Prada dress with a cheeky tech accessory: a ’90s-style Tamagotchi.

Bikinis are made for scorchers, when lounging by a pool or sunbathing in a park (or at the beach) is the only way to spend the day. Try styling colourful triangle tops with a slightly unbuttoned breezy shirt and shorts for the daytime, or a flowing dress – with halterneck bikini straps peeping through – for the evening.

What do Elton John, Joe Biden and Gloria Steinem have in common? They’re all fans of a statement pair of sunglasses. There’s only a few wardrobe heroes that, no matter the season, will always make a welcome addition to any outfit. Sleep-deprived? Put on some shades. Feeling sassy? Some stylish frames will amplify your mood. Boarding a plane to the Med? You get the gist.

And now that the mercury is rising again, and we’re slowly stumbling back into the daylight, reaching for your sunglasses is not only a fashion statement, but the panacea to ease your way back into reality and make everything look, well, just a little softer (rose-tinted glasses anyone?)

Hailey Bieber is an unabashed Y2K style fanatic through and through. The Miu Miu campaign star often adds vintage gems to her relaxed uniform in a way that feels both contemporary and effortless. Bieber’s beauty looks, meanwhile, frequently include 2000s hairstyles that wouldn’t look out of place on Lizzie McGuire. And her sartorial choices – think micro underarm bags and low-slung jeans – mirror that of Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie’s kitschy aesthetic in their heyday. Even when she’s sporting a plain T-shirt and jeans, she can’t help but opt for a loose-fitting pair of denim.

While supporting her husband Justin Bieber on his Justice tour this week, the 25-year-old took her love of retro style to new heights. The model was photographed walking alongside Justin looking like she’d just time-travelled back from the ’90s. On top, Hailey wore a red Fila sweater vest (most likely a Depop score) which she teamed with indigo cargo trousers (a trend endorsed by new-gen stars), pigtails and red Jordan 1 hi-top trainers.

Are you looking to make your first real spring investment (and have already stocked up on spring jackets)? A freshly pressed shirt is the hero purchase that will instantly update your new season wardrobe. Lacking inspiration? Worry not as the spring/summer runways were awash with this sartorial staple.

At Raf Simons, oversized shirts in colourful stripes and white contrasting collars were cuffed to the models with crystal-encrusted skeleton hands. At Valentino, Pierpaolo Piccioli ticked several boxes with floral prints, retina-searing brights and lace shirts, while at Miu Miu, Miuccia Prada made a case for the blue Oxford shirt.

Off the runway, the properties of a good shirt come in many guises, too. Dressing for British spring (gale winds, blue skies, torrential rain — you name it) is a Sisyphean task to which a shirt offers quick respite. Cover up your thermals or pop on a jumper for an amphibious approach to spring dressing. Then, of course, there’s the shirt’s shapeshifting qualities, taking you from sunrise to sunset with a simple accessory swap: add a defiant dose of ear bling to take you from the office to the bar and trade in loafers for heeled mules.

While most of us will already have several iterations hanging in our closets, now is the perfect time to give this classic an upgrade. In the market for a look-at-me flirt shirt à la Gucci autumn winter 1995? Lucky for you, Tom Ford has reissued some of his most iconic silk shirts, which should be worn mainly unbuttoned — bien sûr. Maximalists should turn to Dries Van Noten’s saccharine sweet prints, while those who feel drawn to arts and crafts, openwork fabrics, lace and broderie anglaise should check out Simone Rocha. In short: there’s a plethora of options to satisfy every spring craving.

Victoria and David Beckham just celebrated a major milestone: their first-born son Brooklyn’s wedding to Nicola Peltz over the weekend. The proud parents – who’ve been married for an impressive 22 years – were certainly dressed the part at the star-studded Palm Beach ceremony. But this wasn’t the couple’s first rodeo when it comes to serving looks.

When Posh and Becks exchanged their own vows in Ireland on 4 July 1999, they opted for a lavish Robin Hood-themed ceremony and wore distinctive purple outfits at the reception that sent international tabloids into a tailspin. Since then, the pair have been seen in matching looks that range from that head-to-toe leather biker moment, to their more recent complementary earthy shades while holed up at the family’s Cotswolds retreat. The Beckhams’s wardrobes might be more understated these days, but they’re still never anything less than considered.

Back in 2017, Victoria opened up about the secret to their long-lasting relationship, which has endured their more than two decades in the spotlight. “We have a lot of fun together,” she told Vogue. “If I really was as miserable as I look in some of those paparazzi pictures, my children wouldn’t be as happy as they are. And I certainly wouldn’t be married any more.”

Below, see David and Victoria’s most unforgettable looks together to date.

With her innovative take on upcycling, Yasia Khomenko has been a star of Ukraine’s fashion scene long before reinventing used clothes became a buzzy vision of the industry’s eco-conscious future. She first began upcycling for her eponymous label RCR Khomenko in 2010, creating her graduate collection out of her sister’s old wardrobe; meanwhile, for her 2011 runway debut at Ukrainian Fashion Week in Kyiv, she made clothes from curtains and tablecloths sourced from surrounding villages. One of her standout creations is a dress weighing 10kg she made from forgotten merch T-shirts, which was later displayed in the window of the popular boutique Les Suites in Paris.

At the end of February, however, when Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, Khomenko fled Kyiv to temporarily live in the western Ukrainian city of Ivano-Frankivsk. It was there she first began upcycling donated clothes, reworking damaged and unwearable clothing from refugee centres to raise money for charity, before continuing the practice upon relocating to Poland.

At first, Khomenko was using her skills to help to sew items for the Ukrainian military, but while working with local refugee organisations to collect clothing for refugees, she began to notice the surplus of donated garments. Many were not particularly useful for refugees, and so were earmarked to be thrown away. “I was in volunteer centres and there would be dirty bedsheets and erotic s*x costumes, just unnecessary things at this stage,” she says. With this in mind, Khomenko gathered up these damaged donations and began fusing the garment scraps together using compression technology. (Unlike previously, when Khomenko was sewing pieces by hand, the compression technique allowed her to fuse together larger batches of clothing at one time.)

Cast your mind back to the early 2000s when slouchy shoulder bags were all the rage. Mary-Kate and Ashley had yet to discover their penchant for slugging around well-loved roomy totes, and musical duo t.A.T.u was single-handily spearheading the shirtless tie trend that recently made a return on the autumn/winter 2022 runways. Everyday underarm bags, in particular, were less distinctive and were more of an afterthought, rather than the centrepiece. Fast forward to 2022, and designers such as Diesel’s Glenn Martens have ensured micro bags remain a focal point this summer.

Since the announcement of his appointment as creative director back in October 2020 – adding to his already extensive resumé, which currently includes heading up Y/Project’s creative division – the fashion polymath has had all eyes on him. The highly revered creative, who cut his teeth at Jean Paul Gaultier, brought his can’t-be-tamed vision to Gaultier during his haute couture takeover in January. His reimagining of trompe-l’œil prints (which were ubiquitous on the Y/Project runway) was a much-discussed moment at the start of the year. And fashion editors are currently lusting after every single item from the Diesel autumn/winter 2022 collection. Diesel-mania is sweeping the globe – just take a look at Dua Lipa’s wardrobe.

Martens’s interpretation of leather goods has been particularly fascinating to watch. The conventional hallmarks of a classic Diesel bag are still present – think noticeable branding and sturdy handles – but Martens has injected much of his off-beat signature codes into the brand’s napa leather bag line. Colourways are bold, construction is scaled down, and they are purposefully non-gender-specific, with elements of Y2K-tastic detailing. “We compressed the brand’s DNA into accessories,” Martens tells Vogue. “[The] 1DR bag is straight-forward, easy, s*xy, genderless and fun – which, ultimately, are exactly Diesel’s key values.”

A-listers are queuing up to own a piece of the reworked line, and the 1DR bag, in particular, has captured the attention of It-girls globally. Julia Fox was spotted clutching the canary-yellow mini-bag at the show in February. Over on the ’gram, Megan Thee Stallion dedicated an entire carousel to her rose-gold Diesel ensemble with a matching bag, earning over two million likes. Recently, style chameleon Paloma Elsesser added an all-white model to her everyday uniform, and Gossip Girl actor Whitney Peak is rarely seen without her short-strap shoulder bag. “The 1DR bag is a definitive hit,” says British Vogue’s fashion & accessories editor, Donna Wallace. “It’s an easily identifiable accessory, which speaks to the current 2000s renaissance; it’s satisfying to see a brand front and centre of its own moment of appreciation.”

Resale has surged in popularity in recent years, thanks to the rise of sites such as The RealReal, Vestiaire Collective and Depop. But increasingly, brands are looking to take ownership of the growth in second-hand fashion, with the likes of Gucci, Valentino and Jean Paul Gaultier all entering the market of late.

Now, Ganni has become the latest to launch its own resale platform, allowing customers in the UK and Scandinavia to sell and buy pre-loved pieces via a peer-to-peer model. “[During] the last 10 years, it has always been about newness, newness, newness,” Ganni’s creative director Ditte Reffstrup tells Vogue. “But I can see a change – it’s becoming cool and trendy to wear the old stuff.”

Of course, the growing demand for second-hand is in part being driven by increasing concerns about fashion’s environmental impact. “Behaving responsibly has [long] been a priority for us,” Ganni founder Nicolaj Reffstrup says. “When you start mapping out your carbon footprint, you realise quite early on that you need to consider the afterlife of your product.”

Indeed, as Nicolaj points out, more than 70 per cent of garments currently end up in landfills or are incinerated – a shocking figure that shows the level of change that needs to take place within the fashion industry. Meanwhile, waste charity WRAP suggests extending a garment’s life by just nine months can reduce its carbon, waste and water footprints by between 20 to 30 per cent, showing the benefits of getting on board with the resale model.

By integrating resale on its website as part of its Ganni Repeat initiative, the brand wants to make the whole experience as easy as possible for customers, encouraging more to shop second-hand. “The whole point is that we want to make anything that pertains to the afterlife of our product so seamless and fluid that the consumer won’t necessarily notice if he or she is buying a new product, [a second-hand product] or renting a product,” Nicolaj continues.

Further down the line, the brand wants to introduce a notification function, that will allow customers to be alerted if there is demand on the resale market for a garment they’ve previously bought. Nicolaj is quick to point out, though, that resale can’t be simply seen as an excuse for consuming more and more clothes. “There is obviously a risk that this motivates the consumer to spend more money on new stuff,” he says. “So it’s not an excuse to not continue to create new product[s] that [are] constantly improving in terms of responsibility.”

Nonetheless, the rising demand for resale does suggest consumers’ shopping habits are beginning to change, as awareness about fashion’s waste problem grows. “I do hope that sustainability [is the] force behind it; that people actually want to do better,” Ditte adds.

With Ganni also recently partnering with repair service Sojo in the UK, as well as launching rental back in 2019, it’s clear that the Scandi brand is taking a 360-degree approach towards sustainability. “If you want to be in this industry, you have to [introduce these initiatives],” Ditte concludes. “People know that we have to change.”

Стелла Маккартни выпустила капсулу по мотивам мультфильма Disney
