Welcome October! Crisp air, fall festivals, baked acorn squash and the aroma of concord grapes filling the air!
Wait...Concord grapes in Washington State? Definitely not.
But, every October my "smell" memory takes me back to my hometown of Fredonia, NY on the shores of Lake Erie and Concord grapes. It was the perfect climate for growing these purple orbs of deliciousness and we were surrounded by hundreds if not thousands of acres of grapes. Lots of teenagers, including myself earned spending money by hand picking grapes. I was paid a whopping 25 cents a crate! When they were ripe they had to be picked no matter the weather and we picked in the rain when it was so cold my fingers hurt. Sometimes it was sunny and hot but we still picked grapes. The aroma of Concord grapes filled the air all over Chautauqua County and all of us who lived there have never forgotten that beautiful smell. The grapes were taken to the Red Wing canning factory in our little town and made into grape juice and grape jelly. Just down the road in Westfield, NY, was the Welch's canning factory that also produced juice and jelly.
It is a wonderful memory from my growing years and a much simpler time in my life. This is the time of year when I miss Fredonia and all it provided me growing up.
Happy October to you all!
