Mont Saint-Michel
This small rocky island on the northwest coast of France became an impregnable fortress in 709. A small town was built here, where people still live, and almost 300 years later, the Benedictine abbey was built. The island is connected to the mainland by a small causeway. The region is known for very strong tides, so sometimes the road is completely hidden underwater. Mont Saint-Michel is one of the top travel destinations in France. Up to 3.5 million tourists a year come here to admire the ancient architecture. Since 1979, the island and its historic buildings have been protected by UNESCO.
