Google is reconsidering the way it treats AMP in Top Stories and Google News. More specifically, what has been one of the critical requirements to get into the carousel in the last 5️⃣years is now just a nice thing to have. You don’t need to run twin URLs as AMP versions to be featured in 🔝 Stories anymore. And the lightning bolt icon is gone for good.

There’s no place for deceptive, spammy links on the web. Google is stepping up to discourage websites from building them with its new Link Spam Update. Watch out!☝

It’s not uncommon for Google to tweak its spam detection systems, and this new update is yet another effort to clamp down on malpractice. It may impact websites in different languages, especially those that gain an unfair advantage with link schemes 🦝

There are few details on how it will work, but we know for sure that the update will cancel out the effects of spammy links on search results. This also goes for no-markup affiliate, sponsored, and guest post links, which should remind you of using proper link tags

What’s next? You should be extra vigilant as the Link Spam Update is being rolled out. It’ll be ready to take effect in early August, which is when your rankings may start swaying if you use questionable links.

Do you speak Googlebot’s language? 🤔 Because if you don’t, you may not even know your server talks Googlebot out of indexing your pages by serving no-no HTTP status codes.

Google has put together a guide on how Googlebot responds to the most common HTTP status codes it runs into while on duty. See here:👇👇👇

✅2xx status codes convey successful messages, meaning the pages serving them can be indexed. There’s nothing to worry about unless 2xx codes are 204s.
✅3xx status codes redirect Googlebot to different URLs. The key thing here is that while 301s are clear signs for Google to consider pages canonical, 302s and 303s send weaker signals. And Googlebot never follows a redirect chain comprising more than 10 hops.
✅4xx status codes mean the URLs that serve them are not to be indexed or should be deindexed if they have been previously indexed. The only exception is 429s that tell Google to keep pages in the index, at least for some time.
✅5xx status codes make Googlebot reduce the crawl rate. But if your pages return 500s, 502s, and 503s for a long time, they will be deindexed.
