St. Augustine Lighthouse, Florida
The St. Augustine Lighthouse is visited by more than 216,000 people annually, but it’s just as well-known for its otherworldly guests. Several tragic events that occurred at the now-historic site have contributed to the alleged paranormal activity. The ghost of a lighthouse keeper who fell to his death while painting the tower has been spotted watching over the grounds. And ever since the horrific death of three young girls, who drowned when the cart they were playing in broke and fell into the ocean, visitors have claimed to hear the sounds of children playing in and around the lighthouse.

Al Madam, United Arab Emirates
There is something eerily beautiful about ghost towns, and Al Madam is no exception. Located in about 40 miles southeast of Dubai, the village was most likely built in the 1970s and deserted shortly after—a fact that local legend attributes to djinn (shape-shifting spirits) scaring people straight out of town. No one knows whether or not the spirits have lingered, but Al Madam still has a sort of haunted quality to it: dunes encroaching on the two rows of houses and a mosque, sand falling through broken windows like waves, and a seemingly endless sea of ochre desert stretching out in every direction.

Wadi Rum Protected Area, Jordan
In a country steeped with ancient Bedouin culture, Wadi Rum stands out for its undulating sand dunes, rust-tinted folds of sedimentary sandstone, and the vermillion cliffs of Khazali Canyon. The terrain is so remote and alien, it’s often referred to as “Valley of the Moon.” From the 2,000-year-old Alameleh Inscriptions to locally-run multi day camel tours, a trip to Wadi Rum feels like being transported far back in time. Fly into Aqaba on the Red Sea, book a private driver to the reserve, and stay at the Bubble Luxotel for unforgettable stargazing when the sun goes down.

Khao Sok National Park, Thailand
Escape the over-touristed beach cities of Phuket and Railay for the soaring limestone cliffs and howling gibbons of Khao Sok National Park. Home to the oldest evergreen rainforest in the world, this lakeside landscape is as verdant as they come. After a quick puddle-jumper flight from Bangkok to Suret Thani, hop onto a bus or taxi to shimmering, many-tendriled Cheow Larn Lake. There, you’ll find luxe floating bungalows (some even have jacuzzis), and canoe trips through the dense Thai jungle.

Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
If gorilla tracking in the dense rainforest of east Africa is on your must-do list, there’s no better place than Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. Home to the dormant Karisimbi Volcano (topping out at a staggering 14,787 feet) and a variety of verdant montane ecosystems like bamboo forests, grasslands, and shrubland heath, the park protects twelve families of endangered mountain gorillas. With only 96 tracking permits for these great apes available each day, visiting the primates in their natural habitat is a hot commodity. Though pricey, a number of well-respected tour operators offer the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of witnessing these creatures in the wild, beginning and ending in the capital city of Kigali.

Valletta, Malta
This fortified city is one of the world’s most concentrated historic areas. Malta’s capital city is home to 320 monuments that date back to the 16th century and tell the story of artistic, civil, military, and religious history. While Malta has been ruled by a variety of civilizations from the Phoenicians to the Byzantines, many of these buildings were created during the rule of the Order of St. John. You’ll see mainly Baroque architecture when you walk around the city, with a few neoclassical, modernist, and Mannerist pieces along the way.
