In fact, marketing is a much deeper and wider concept than just promotion, advertising and sale. In the widest sense, marketing is a generalizing concept that, among other things, determines the place of the enterprise on the market in relation to competitors, its competitive advantages, as well as the choice of promising market segments, which it plans to serve.
Marketing, besides what allows you to determine the promising market segments (and a conscious refusal to the market segments with which we are not going to cooperate), also includes the relationship with customers - participants in those market segments that we selected for themselves.
Such communication, as a rule, should occur in the form of a dialogue, not a monologue. In other words, marketing implies the "ability to listen to the opinion of the client" or the market research.
