Milan was the first place in Italy I ever visited back in November 1998. I didn’t like it. I visited 2 other times and didn’t like it. And here I am now for the 4th time and really enjoying it. It’s because I came with managed expectations, realizing it’s not like other Italian cities, and a plan. And a funny thing happened…it’s been a lovely stay.
Milan is a city of business and fashion. It’s not a pretty city but has pretty parts. It’s not a touristy city but has plenty of tourists. Milan is a place where people who live, love it. Few tourists will ever say they love it or even like it.
I came with a plan to enjoy Milan. I strategically planned where I’m staying to be walkable or easy metro to everywhere I wanted to go.
Last night I went to the AC Milan Champions League match at San Siro. It was such an awesome stadium with a very intimidating atmosphere. Then I checked out a few famous cocktail bars and a great restaurant.
Today, instead of renting a car and driving to Lake Como, I decided to stay in Milan and walk around, take a breath and enjoy being in this Italian city by doing Italian things like eating pasta, drinking coffee, Campari and relaxing. I even met up with a few friends who are randomly in town. It’s been a great day and a great stay!
Milan will never be my or anyones favorite Italian city. You don’t just wander and stumble onto amazing things like in Rome, Florence or Venice. Milan is gritty, ugly and pretty at the same time but it’s real. I like that and I’m at peace with Milan after 4 visits.
