Macchiato (espresso macchiato; Italian caffè macchiato [kafˈfɛ mmakˈkjaːto]; lit. "spotted") is a coffee drink made by adding a minimal amount of milk, usually whipped, to espresso.

Macchiato is significantly stronger and more aromatic than, it would seem, a cappuccino similar in ingredients. Similar to cappuccino, serves as the basis for latte art. When adding ice milk, it is called Italian. Freddo, hot - Italian. Caldo.

The origin of the name of the drink is related to the fact that in Europe of the 17th century, the name of the order of Capuchins served, in particular, to denote the characteristic color (red-brown), which the robes of the monks of this order had; in the 18th century, they also began to call the coffee drink made from egg yolks and cream, which began to be prepared in Austria (German: Kapuziner). The Italian form of the name of the drink (cappuccino) has been fixed only since the 20th century. In the 19th century, Padre Carlo invented the first cappuccino machine, where water was heated in one compartment and steam was produced, and the steam went through a tube to the second compartment, where milk was foamed.
