Americano was invented by Italians who were faced with an influx of American soldiers during World War II. The American military ordered coffee, but they did not like the Italian espresso: the cup was too small and the taste was too rich.

The first espresso machine was invented in 1901 in Milan, Italy by an engineer named Luigi Bezzera. The machine was a horizontal boiler filled with boiling water and steam (temperature up to 145°), which created the pressure necessary for the passage of water through special baskets containing coffee.
