Seventy-five years on from the first mysterious sightings in the US, the flying saucer makes its return in Jordan Peele's new film Nope. Nicholas Barber looks back at one of the most haunting objects in popular culture.

It's only there for a moment in the trailer for Jordan Peele's new horror film, Nope, but it's definitely there: a flying saucer. Judging by the twists and turns in Peele's previous films, Get Out and Us, it's impossible to say whether its real or fake, whether it's from the Earth or from outer space, but that glimpse of sparkling silver is tantalising. Maybe, just maybe, Nope will be a proper flying-saucer movie – a celebration of one of the most recognisable and spine-tingling shapes in the history of popular culture.

First, there was Samsung Wallet. Then it became Samsung Pay. Now, because time is a flat circle, Samsung is bringing the Wallet app back — basically, bringing a lot of existing Samsung services into one app. And this time, there’s crypto!

The new Samsung Wallet is available today, and it will take the place of the current Pay and Pass apps, which currently handle payment cards and passwords, respectively. It also integrates with SmartThings to store certain digital home and car keys.

And, of course, the new Samsung Wallet integrates with the existing Samsung Blockchain Wallet app, so you can easily check the value of your cryptocurrency portfolio. Or maybe don’t. Samsung also plans to add some features it teased at its Unpacked event earlier this year, including the ability to store your digital IDs and driver’s license.

Other than running Tesla, SpaceX, and — perhaps at some point if the buyout is complete — Twitter, Elon Musk is staying busy with yet another appeal in his case against the SEC. His beef with the government agency is, as it has been for the last several years, over the 2018 settlement he agreed to after being charged with securities fraud over a tweet about taking Tesla private. In April, US District Judge Lewis Liman was not swayed by Eminem-related arguments from Elon’s lawyers and ruled to let the agreement stand as originally written.

Now, Musk’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, has filed with the court to take his case to the US Court of Appeals in the hope of a different decision. The world’s richest man has argued that he was coerced into settling with the SEC, that its investigations into Tesla are “like having a gun to your child’s head,” and has argued to the court that the SEC is motivated against him by political bias as it continues to monitor his Twitter activity.

The case started with his tweet about Tesla.

The Lakehouse: An Uplift of Data Warehouse Architecture

In short, the initial architecture of the data warehouse was designed to provide analytical insights by collecting data from various heterogeneous data sources into the centralized repository and acted as a fulcrum for decision support and business intelligence (BI). But it has continued with numerous challenges, like more time consumed on data model designing because it only supports schema-on-write, the inability to store unstructured data, tight integration of computing, and storage into an on-premises appliance, etc.

This article intends to highlight how the architectural pattern is enhanced to transform the traditional data warehouse by rolling over the second-generation platform data lake and eventually turning it into a lakehouse. Although the present data warehouse supports three-tier architecture with an online analytical processing (OLAP) server as the middle tier, it is still a consolidated platform for machine learning and data science with metadata, caching, and indexing layers that are not yet available as a separate tier.

This article highlights how an architectural pattern is enhanced and transformed into a traditional data warehouse, eventually turning it into a data lakehouse.
