Milk from sleepy cows... suggests drowsiness.

Milk contains a special chemical substance - tryptophan. In the human body, tryptophan is converted into hormones that help you fall asleep. Milk from cows milked at night contains more tryptophan than usual.

Tryptophan is a chemical that can turn into: serotonin, the "hormone of happiness" that creates a feeling of peace and comfort; melatonin is a chemical that regulates the sleep cycle. Most of it is produced in the dark.

Honey never goes bad…
because it's a natural bacteria killer.

Pots of honey were found in ancient Egyptian tombs. It is still edible, even though it has been underground for several thousand years. Honey does not spoil, because bacteria that destroy other products cannot live in it. Honey has three properties that make it antibacterial.

Honey is acidic. It contains gluconic acid, which kills bacteria. Honey contains a small amount of hydrogen peroxide, which is used to make bleach. It also kills bacteria. Honey is hygroscopic, that is, it contains very little water. And without water, bacteria cannot live.

All types of pasta are initially made in the same way - durum wheat flour is mixed with water. And then they are given hundreds of different forms. Each shape matches a certain sauce and has a special name.

Scallops: thick tomato sauces that stick to them.

Spirals: a pesto sauce that fills their curves.

Turtles: creamy sauces

Short: thick, meaty sauces that require products with a strong shape
so as not to spread.

Long: Oily sauces that coat and separate individual pasta.

Small: they are added to soups and salads.

Kiwis ripen faster... if you put them next to apples and tomatoes.

Apples, tomatoes, and bananas release a gas — ethylene — that causes some fruits and vegetables to ripen faster. This can be useful, but it can also be the opposite: products can spoil before you have time to eat them.

Ethylene causes a series of reactions inside the fruit, so that it softens and sweetens, and then begins to rot.

Some fruits, such as bananas, release ethylene themselves and react to it themselves. So if you keep a banana in a closed bag, it will reach by itself.

There are spices in the world more expensive
than silver and gold.

Saffron, a yellow spice made from dried crocus pods, is the most expensive product in the world. By weight, it is worth even more than gold. And all because it can only be collected by hand.

Only 1 flower grows from one crocus bulb. Each flower grows only 3 receptacles - they are so fragile that they can only be plucked by hand. The flower blooms only once a year. The dried samples are only 20% of their original size. And this means that a farmer has to grow 150 flowers to get only 1 gram of saffron. 1 gram of saffron costs 75 pounds (approximately 2,500 hryvnias), and 1 gram of gold costs 25-35 pounds (approximately 820 to 1,150 hryvnias).

If chickens could fly...
the meat from their breasts would be red.

Muscles that move regularly get energy from oxygen, which is carried to the cells by a red protein called myoglobin. The more myoglobin, the redder or darker the meat.

Chickens and turkeys rarely use the muscles in the upper part of their bodies, so there is practically no myoglobin in their wings and breasts. That is why the meat in this area is white. Fish muscles contain very little myoglobin. Therefore, even fish with a red color, such as tuna, is still considered white meat. Cow meat (beef) is red because cows are constantly moving all their muscles when standing or walking.

Cookies contain more energy ...
than explosives.

Energy in food can be measured in calories, as well as in universal units of energy - kilojoules. When you eat, your body absorbs calories and turns them into energy to think, move, and live.

The body uses calories obtained from cookies and other foods gradually, that is, energy is released over a long period of time. Equally heavy cookies and explosives called TNT contain different amounts of potential energy. TNT, although it has less energy, explodes because it releases all the energy at once.

The most important nutrition skills are learned from childhood - that is why adults need to explain to children in time what we eat in order to be healthy first of all. Cognitive literature can be useful. The publishing house publishes the children's encyclopedia "100 facts about food" - a book about what we eat, how and why. Inside, there are not only interesting facts about the products we eat, the history of dishes or strange taste preferences of historical figures, but also basic information about nutrients, vitamins, and features of certain products. With the book "100 facts about food", young readers will be able to learn about their body, about healthy and harmful food, as well as how food can change the world. Aurora Ogorodnyk became the gastro expert of the Ukrainian publication.
