SECOND EDITION OF ACOLI CULTURAL FESTIVAL A HUGE SUCCESS
Acoli from all parts of the country flocked in droves to witness the annual Acoli Cultural Festival held over the long week at Kaunda Ground. Some people also came from neighbouring districts and other regions to attend the festival.
Speaking at the grand finale of the three-day festival, which started on Wednesday, 13th and ended on Saturday, 14th December with outstanding performances, exhibitions and lots of other activities under theme “Acoli heritage for greater productivity”, The Acoli Paramount Chief, Rwot David Onen Acana II, who also doubled as the main celebrant of the festival, Rwot David Onen Acana II, said Acoli Cultural Festival is an important platform that has been initiated with a major objective of creating new pillars on which Acoli communities can build unity amongst themselves through celebrating Acoli Cultural heritage.
He further said, Acoli must embark in real hard work and production to boost our living in Acoli Land etc. Acoli people need to come together to discuss issues affecting their respective communities and to revitalize the Acoli traditional customs, norms, history and language.
“This is a historic day that signifies our oneness, and to share information across our rich Acoli traditions, history, language, norms and customs,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo, who also attended the festival, said cultural events signify human pinnacles and bring to the fore identities of a nation, a society, a community and a tribal group.
“It is at cultural festivals where people gather to share and demonstrate their traditional practices more openly and closely, putting aside their political and social status, and display high levels of tolerance, mutual respect and understanding,” he noted.
The responsibility of Acoli leaders is to identify, develop and promote the material and spiritual culture and heritage of Acoli for the purpose of nurturing national pride and identity.
The Acoli cultural festival exceeded expectations, and that makes this event a truly phenomenal one, he added.
“This festival is one of the exercises defined by the direct involvement of Acoli on their own volition without coercing by the government and other forces
“We must, therefore, spare no effort in building bridges and using culture as a pillar of strength to unite Acoli people,” he urged.
He further appealed to all Acoli to participate in their cultural activities and to uphold traditional values and customs.
In attendance was also the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon, Jacob Oulanya, The President General of the Democratic Party, Norbert Mao, Gulu RDC, Okot Santo, Cultural leaders from all over Acoli and other regions and Miss Tourism Northern Region Queens and others.
