Today is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which came up by resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on the 22nd of December 2015.
The day recognizes the critical role women and girls play in science and technology. The day's purpose is to promote full and equal access to participation in science for women and girls.

While more girls in Uganda are attending school than before, girls are still significantly under represented in Science, Technology and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. In order to encourage more women and girls to take up education and careers in STEM, the Ministry of Education and Sports has invested in training of more science teachers and creating more opportunities for women and girls in Schools, Colleges and Universities.
For Instance, The Ministry introduced the Secondary Science ( Biology, Chemistry and Physics) and Mathematics SESEMAT programme in 2005 with the aim to improve the teaching ability of science and mathematics Teachers at secondary level and improve student's performance in these subjects.

The theme for this year's International Day of Women and Girls in Science is "Investment in Equality in Science, Technology and Innovation in the Digitalization Era for Inclusive Green Growth."
