Within plantation based investments, violations of workers’ rights especially those of women is both intense and extensive. Many violations occur in some of the most productive and profitable value chains such as sugar, palm oil, rice, coffee, tea, flowers, to***co, among others. They range
from exposure to chemicals that cause irritations on the skin and nose due to lack of appropriate protective gears; very low wages as low as 4,400 Uganda shillings a day; very heavy work load, involving carrying of 1,200 kilograms of load a day, whether by a woman or a man; to a high levels of job insecurity, among others.
This is what our partners Seatini Uganda will be discussing today with women rights organizations, women rights activists, civil society, trade unions, and human rights defenders - to drive preparations and draw out a road map for mobilizing women’s voices, engaging in policy advocacy, as well as identifying and utilizing alternative strategies to remedy the affected women workers.
