Curtains are down for the first of its kind in Uganda, Social Marketing Conference. And what an event! The conference running the theme "Fostering behavior change and sustainable health markets through social marketing" attracted lots of brilliant minds and presentations that talked markets, communication and behavior.
UHMG Managing Director Ms Joyce Tamale welcome all participants at the conference, expressing her joy and thanks to the organizing committee for "pulling off this milestone." She wished everyone attending a learning-filled two days.
Opening the events, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health- Uganda Dr Diana Atwine, thanked UHMG for the "milestone" achieved in "pulling off an event of this magnitude" noting that the conference "will give life to stronger partnerships and networks that will boost communication at the grassroot thereby improving the health of Ugandans."
Dr. Atwine, sinked by the 70% disease burden in Uganda, noted that majority of diseases affecting Ugandans do not need more hospitals solely, but communication to change their behavior as they are preventable from households. She also vowed to deal with herbalists who are flooding the markets with high risk "untested, non-prescribed" medicines that they are giving people.
Highlight of Day I was the mind blowing presentation from Nancy R Lee on social marketing. Nancy, in simple explanation, noted that Social Marketing aims at changing people's behavior for social good evolving on the 4 Ps of Place, Promotion, People and Product.
Nancy classified into three groups the people social marketing targets, the Show Me who are ready to practise a good behavior availed (16%) the Help Me who do not practice the behavior yet but are willing to listen and change (68%) and the Make Me (16%) who will ONLY change if a legislation is put in place. They just won't change absent coercion. In her remarks, Nancy asked that gives should always be on the Help Me group as they have a high Return On Investment due to their willingness to change.
There were lots of other presentations from various people and all this information is available on our twitter handle . We can not wait for DAY II.
