I absolutely loved seeing Mindy in this dress! She looks so elegant. The color scheme is perfect for her and I love how the shoulders are accentuated to give her more structure and bring attention above the waist, giving balance in her silhouette. The fact that the darker color is in the skirt also draws attention away from below the waist where the silhouette carries more proportion. BUT… I couldn’t help to think what it might look like if we brought attention to the waist. Mindy has a rectangular body type. In other words, accentuating the midsection has to be done with belts or breaking up color. While this dress is absolutely gorgeous, I wanted to see her waist be accentuated more so I did it myself 😂 Can you see the difference?

I know you own a few pairs of linen pants that are an olive drab, or black, or a linen dress. This is an excellent time to wear linens and cotton from the brown-orange side of the color wheel, such as terra-cotta, paprika, rust or copper color. The purple family can also be pulled in as a way to wear slightly reddish tone such as burgundy, Merlot, deep berry colors. These are the fall colors we love without the weight of a heavier fabric.

Can I wear white after Labor Day? This is a common question heard every year at this time. For the fashion purists, the answer to this question is straightforward; no wearing white after Labor Day. I appreciate a rule but if you know me, I like to push a rule or two. The Labor Day purist likes to usher in the fall color palette with no ambiguity as to who deserves center stage. I applaud the enthusiasm for wearing fall colors from this perspective. After all, the fall color palette of differing shades of copper, camel, deep maroons, and piney greens is  truly exciting to wear.
 
While this rule has kept us in line for decades, times-are-a-changing. By that I mean, the climate has changed. When this rule was constructed, fall was a time of year when the weather began to show signs of cool, crisp temperatures beginning in early September. For the last several years I’ve worn tank tops through the end of October. Climate change has pushed cooler temperatures further back into our calendar, so it’s hard to put those lighter, cooler summertime clothes away. So what to do?

I love this linen coral colored dress!
But, I haven’t worn it all summer. I was looking through my closet realizing that Labor Day is around the corner and there are a few key pieces in my closet that I love I have not worn all summer. What is in your closet that says “summer time” that you haven’t worn yet?

2. Check labels, always try on.
3. Be planful of what goes in your closet.
4. Stay away from fast fashion for work horse pieces.
5. Ask yourself screening questions- does this really fit? Will I wear it? Where will I wear it?
