It’s strange how one decision can quietly change the direction of your entire life.

At 17, I wasn’t thinking about immigration, visas, living in different countries or eventually helping other people build lives abroad.

I just knew there was a place I’d been dreaming about … and I had a chance to see it for myself.

After losing my best friend a few years earlier, I think I understood very young that life doesn’t always wait until you feel ready.

So I went.

And that trip showed me something I’ve carried with me ever since: The life you imagine can become real.

You don’t have to know exactly where one decision will lead.

Sometimes you just have to take the first step toward the thing you can’t stop thinking about ❤️

And who knows where that first step might take you.

Sometimes you move somewhere new… but your old fears come with you.

That’s what stayed with me about this story.

Nothing at her new job in the Netherlands had given her a reason to panic about calling in sick.

But her past experiences had taught her to expect consequences anyway.

And sometimes it takes experiencing a completely different response to realize just how much you’ve been carrying with you.

This story came from a conversation an American living in the Netherlands started on Reddit, and I thought it was such an interesting example of culture shock that isn’t really about food, language or customs.

It’s about the things we’ve learned to consider “normal.”

Some experiences don’t change your life because they were comfortable.

They change it because they show you a completely different way of living, connecting and being with other people.

That month in Sri Lanka gave me a very different definition of what makes a life feel rich ❤️

And years later, I still think about it.

One of my favorite things about living abroad has always been this: you don’t just discover other cultures… You start seeing your own life differently, too.

The things you value. The things you take for granted. Even your definition of what a “good life” looks like.
